Tube teachings?!

Saw this & HAVE to ask!
I've heard Mullard are one of the best Valve/Tube makes, but this for a matched quad (& this was one of the cheaper deals, one was starting at £650!) seems insane to the other makes!!!
Is this what you'd REALLY expect to pay for these valves!
If so WOW,I won't be getting any!

Mullard EL34 Valve/Tube Matched Quad NOS on eBay!

EDIT:As in Mullards,obviously I'd buy replacement valves when the amp needs them,but there's a BIG difference between £150 & £500!!!!

Re: Tube teachings?!

I don't buy nos power tubes. i can't justify the cost either. even new power tubes are too much imo. preamp though i do once in awhile.

i have two that are still good that i use. an RCA 7025 (these are my favorite) and the GE 7025. you can get them at reasonable prices and for me being a modern player tone's in the preamp mostly.

now OS tubes are good if you're running an old ass amp because they're designed to run hotter and harder and the old tubes could take it but in new amps it doesn't matter.

Chinese tubes are built tough though so if you need the old style for durability but can't afford it they're doable.

personaly i don't care for them much most times but pwoer tube wise i've never tried them.

Re: Tube teachings?!

As for power tubes and tone - It really depends on your amp and how you use it. If you are playing at bedroom levels on a 100 watt amp, odds are you wont hear much difference between most power tubes. If you are running you master higher, in most cases there significant audible difference. And in this case the market is driving the price.

That being said, I have never spent that much on a set of NOS tubes. I look for deals and buy form people I trust. I have a set of RCA 6L6's (the "holy grail" of 6L6's) in my Dual rec that came out of a 60's Silvertone amp. The amp was free. But I have seen RCA 6L6's go for $500 for a matched quad. I have several oter sets (RFT, Telefunken etc) and I can hear a pretty big difference between NOS and CP tubes.

Also, the CP Mullard tubes sound nothing like the originals. The CP Mullards are made by New Sensor (AKA Sovetec).

Re: Tube teachings?!

Well the reason for this post is the 'Head Tech' from HP came to look at our Indigo 7000 (Print machine) & when we got talking showed him pic of my amp & he was genuinely blown!
Came out with all the stuff techs come out with on here when people buy a vintage (do you need pot changing, does it make a humming noise etc. I'll call round & sort it for you)
Mentioned valves & first thing he said was 'Mullard used to be one of THE best' obviously he knew his stuff!
Anyways I like it as it is & I'm only playing at low volumes so I'd go for a 'winged c' replacement but I'd love to hear Mullards in a YJM just to see what all the fuss/price is about!
Thanks for the responses guys!

Re: Tube teachings?!

In a bar...
with a drummer
and
a bass player
and
three vocal mic's

My guess is the difference won't be important

Now:
On a STAGE
with a $1700 guitar mic
as well as a direct line to the PA
with the Head master Vol on 7 or 8
YEAH... I bet it matters

but that ain't me....

Re: Tube teachings?!

Well as I've said before QK I'm just a 'hobby player' but when you see a price tag like that you've got to wonder!
I suppose it's like guitars,I love a Gibson Les Paul but is a 1959 REALLY worth 100k+ when a new one can be had for less than 2k?
Makes you wonder value for money!!!
