Double tracking vocals?

I was listening to a Megadeth song, Killing is my business (I believe it was the remastered version so everything stuck out more, but I've noticed this on the original version of the entire album too) but it sounds like Dave Mustaine recorded 2 vocal tracks, one of him singing fairly high, the other of him singing lowish and growly (I thought it was just Dave Ellefson doing lots of backup vocals, but both sound like Mustaine)

Could just be the reverb, but it doesn't really sound like it.

There's the song, with a brutal video.

Anyway, no complaints about it, just wondering, is this a common thing to do, what other bands have done it?

Re: Double tracking vocals?

I think it's more common than you think...same thing with bands who have only 'one' guitarist. The album is them playing solo's over their own rythym track.

Re: Double tracking vocals?

I've always caught this in a bunch of GN'R songs. You can hear multiple Axl's singing.

Re: Double tracking vocals?

Different style of rock, but listen to any old Boston album up to "Third Stage". It's all Brad Delp doing bazillion part harmonies with himself. It was said that the guy was so good that he would create the harmonies on the spot, track after track, so there were plenty of alternatives to use in the final mix. When they performed live they just worked out reasonable sounding harmonies with the rest of the band members.
