Exposing my crappy form...

So I send my buddy via YouTube some lesson and stuff.. it's a great way to communicate musically since he's now in San Diego with his wife and kids and I'm in Seattle
The attached video I shot today - because he and I have been going back and forth arguing that there is HUGE value in learning even stuff you don't like or don't really care about... but we learn from it...

Larry Carlton's - Steely Dan - Don't Take Me alive
basically this whole video is me arguing my point
and I NEVER edit my playing when I hit play I go and whatever happens stays on the recording - anything else I consider B.S.
Shamelessly crappy playing is my motto

Re: Exposing my crappy form...

Hey mate dont sell your playing short
It's great imo balls ups an all, and I couldn't agree more with you statement that it pays to be open minded about music and also to learn things we wouldn't normally listen to or even like. There are valuable lessons there for us all, it's when genres cross that the real interesting things happen the countryesq licks that Zakk uses is a classic example of this in action
rock on dude

Re: Exposing my crappy form...

I liked what you are doing. I dont know the song but I am definitely going to check it out after hearing that. That is a cool funky bluesy solo that I would love to learn.
Did you learn it from Tab or book or what?

Nice one

The Steely Dan song:
"Don't Take me Alive" is masterful writing and ridiculous playing chops
The Larry Carlton intro guitar solo has taken on legendary historical status

I believe it was Frank Zappa who observed that Larry's solo has the feel and phrasing of a regular guitar track played backwards - in reverse - and Frank was like, I don't know how a guy sits down and just drops that out there (famously) in one take...

The chord structure of the song is also beyond brilliant - a must learn track for any curious guitarist

Note: I don't read music or know about tabs
I'm just old and been playing since I was in 6th grade
It helped that during my college years I was in a regular rock cover band and a country bar band
as well as a vocal acoustic pop band (with girls... my motivation for that lame project was the girls)

but over time I just learned a bunch of stuff - my execution is pretty mediocre as I an not much of a "technique freak" as I am a feel and groove player

it's a Jazz type of feel. he plays outside notes inside the time. I think it's cool because that was naturaly how i played. I had to completely change everything about my playing to branch out. I naturaly gravitated to what i guess seemed odd to other people too. That's why i play metal now. everythings dead on and precise. finding a balance was what i was shooting for but yeah i get his playing very much. i get what he's doing within the song as well and it's definitely his own thing but yeah it's Jazzy and in rock pentatonic format mostly. i like it

I'm no Larry Carelton or anything like that.. In fact i'm not very confident about my playing at all but i sitll try anyway.

Cool stuff man.

Re: Exposing my crappy form...

That is my favorite Steely Dan song, and you're right. You can learn a lot even from other genres.

Re: Exposing my crappy form...

That was a cool lesson! And good tips about breaking it down because you can find some gold in here or there.
And about learning stuff that you don't really like... I completely agree. You can get some useful stuff out of it. It doesn't mean you'll be doing it (maybe by doing it you can get into it!), but it's looking at things from another perspective and that can help when going back to doing "your thing".

And I like your motto, I can relate to it

That Strat is a regular American Standard in Olympic White
I replaced the original tortoise shell pick-guard with a RED one
Removed the white pick-up covers and replaced them with black
Removed the tone knobs and replaced with black
Replaced all the screws with black ones
and then slapped in a Gibson Dirty Fingers Pick-up
and had a Kahler Bridge System installed

Thanks for the personal compliments as well
If you knew Ed (who I send those to) you gotta stay calm for him and logical - he insists on an even logical presentation

Re: Exposing my crappy form...

Nice Quasar.

Definitely agree with you and other posters: it's worthwhile listening to good players in other styles.
