A friend of mine that i use to play with back in the 80's tried out for the VW contest ( doing so only because the sponsor originally had a slow sign up) won for the east coast & got a free car & guitar plus sponsors & he wasn't even trying to win in fact played his part left & came back at end where he was announced the winner
