Any songs that are kicking your butt?

Right now, Mississippi Queen by Mountain is kicking mine. Seems simple, but some of the timing is throwing me off.

Damn you Leslie West, damn you sir Damn your killer tone in those Sunn Collesium pa heads, and damn your suberb sense of phrasing.

Any songs that are handing your hindmost parts to you, that you're trying to learn?

Re: Any songs that are kicking your butt?

I would say, most songs I'm trying to learn are doing more than kicking me in the butt...

Right now I'm sort of in the "video game music on guitar" mood, but that aside, I am trying to learn Give In To Me by Michael Jackson. It's more a cover I'm doing, so slight changes (for the better, in my opinion) have been done. There's a huge amount of feel in that song that goes hand in hand with playing cleanly and accurately. Enough guitar control knob turning and pickup selector switch flipping to keep me busy. I have to regularly jump between clean, clean-but-breaking-up, crunch and lead tones. And since I have no footswitch for my amp, I have to rely all on my guitar. I COULD use my Bad Monkey, but I like the challenge of being without it.

Raining blood - Slayer. My friggin pinky finger just does NOT want cooperate with me in that song for some reason. every time I play the opening riff, my little finger gives me the "hell no"! it sucks cause it's essential to playing the opening riff. Damn you Kerry King and your articulate pinky fingers!

Re: Any songs that are kicking your butt?

Funny thing is that I had the Shittyest time locking in with 2 minuits till Midnight in that competition, you will hear where I get off in the video's when I post em. It was the Tempo along with playing the accented 3's against a 4's pulse. I have no problem playing that kinda stuff faster, but have a terrible time locking into slower grooves, or divisions and tend to rush them a bit,or mess them up with string noise and flub, as I tend to play a lot harder on slower stuff because it kinda sounds better

Re: Any songs that are kicking your butt?

YouTube this if you can help...

Koko Taylor: "Don't Put Your Hands on Me".

I'm not sure who's playing guitar, could be Buddy Guy.

I can play the notes - just can't settle into it for the long term.

Then the adrenalin kicks in - which doesn't help my timing.
I'm wondering... maybe Valium is the answer for me.

Anybody know if there is a name for this particular rhythym/groove?

Sometimnes I can get it on my own in the dead of night... but on the day, with the band, no luck.

Can't seem to nail a couple of parts in the solo to "Stairway to Heaven", or the intro to Deep Purple's "Strange Kind Of Woman".

I sometimes have to "wingit" so to say, as for some of the musical writings are a little tricky.

The guitar solo on the Final Countdown is just a b*tch for me. I have been trying forever on it but it's just the way the fingering is on it that it just gives me trouble every time I try to play it.

Raining blood isn't that tricky, at least I don't think so. What part are you using your pinky on in the opening riff? I'm thinking through it and I don't think I use my pinky finger at all in that song.

Haha ... I had the same problem. For a long while that little middle-part eluded me.. I just faked it ... but one weekend I said F*** it ! So I found a slow down uTube clip and I probably played that part 200 times before I got it.

I'm D-tuned so... Also I use my pinky finger for everything it's a bad habit I got into at the age of about 18 and never got out of. I play my power chords with my pinky for god's sake.

The solo of still of the night did, but now I nail. I usually don't play other people's solos. But I thought this one kicked ass so hard I had to learn it!

I've struggled with 'Strange kind of woman' for a while, can't nail 'Lazy' perfectly either.
Blackmore's picking style still eludes me. I think it's fairly Jazz based with every note picked out using alterate strokes, but that's just what I'm hearing.

I lile using my pinky too. But my hand are also small so I prefer not stretching needlessly. I play power chords like you do also.

Re: Any songs that are kicking your butt?

The bridge/solo section of Corrosion of Conformity's "Heaven's not Overflowing"
It's not difficult, just going to take a while to get everything tight switching from rhythm to lead playing (and back..)

Re: Any songs that are kicking your butt?

@ bloosman

Yes, that's the one.

Blues/Funk is what it is then.

On any given Sunday I can easily play some blues and then some funk, and rock, and samba, and back again - but I can't seem to settle into this one.

Seems like one of the switches in my brain has not been set to "get into the groove" mode.

Ok, I've got the rhythm parts for Mountain MS Queen down now....yay.

I'm trying to learn the into for Cream's Crossroads. The faster parts are killing me.

Detroit Rock City....the entire Kiss catalog, actually...but mostly that one. I don't know why, but every time we start doing it, I keep playing The Boys Are Back In Town. I've got 2 weeks to beat that.

It's maddening.
