Cover bands

What bands do you think are better to cover? a cover band that is going to attract public. I mean, not that band that you like but that one people will pay to see you cover.

Some examples:

- Beatles (always works well but too many bands)
- Stones
- Dire Straits
- Led Zeppelin
- GN'R
- ACDC
- Queen
- Pink Floyd
- Van Halen

Any other suggestion?

In my area we have a bunch of guys doing the tribute cover band thing. There's bands doing Ozzy, Rush, 2 ACDC shows, Zepplin, Queen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Anthrax, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and more. They do pretty well. They play some of the bigger clubs. It looks like the Ozzy, Floyd And Zepplin shows seem to have the longevity going for them. They have over 10 years or better under their belts.

Re: Cover bands

Personally, I can't stand cover bands. I don't want to listen to some punk 20 year old playing Killer Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody.

A lot of them are very good, I will admit that, but it's just not the same as the real thing, and I don't like that. I've seen AC/DC in concert, I'm sure that if I saw a cover of them live I would be hugely disappointed.

Re: Cover bands

I agree with HookShot. However good a cover band may be - they'll NEVER be as good as the real thing. Having said that, not everyone thinks so. I believe Pink Floyd, Zeppelin and AC/ DC would be popular choices off that list.

Re: Cover bands

I think you guys are missing the point of cover bands. Of course they are not going to be the same. If you go to a gig expecting that ,you'll be disappointed.
But if your a fan and want to see a show and hear the music live, it's a good option.
Enjoy them for what they are.

Re: Cover bands

It really comes down to money, and your "bookability". Cover bands that play all the songs that the chicks hear on the radio, and can get drunk and dance to, get gigs/money. Most non-musician types just want to sing along with the songs they know. So it's not so much which bands you should cover, it's the songs that are important.

Re: Cover bands

I play in a cover band (good old rock n roll in Malaysia). I looked at that list and the follow up suggestions going "Check, check, check"

God we're a cliche!

Re: Cover bands

I have played in a few Maiden tribute bands, that was the best fun, I also gigged at a few places where Maiden have actually gigged

Re: Cover bands

I think it depends what you are in the band for. Are you in the band to work alot, or are you in the band for artistic expression? Cover bands will get more work probably as most people want to hear something familiar. As a musican I like playing other bands songs, but get more satisfaction from playing my own. Plus there is no feeling like a positive reaction to one of your own songs played live.

Re: Cover bands

The Doors

and I good friend and fellow muscian made a good bit of money in a Grateful Dead cover band

also I would join a Cream cover band
