Slant vs. straight

do you prefer slant or straight, and why?

Re: Slant vs. straight

I run a stereo rack rig so I use one of each in mono and I dont stack em-I run em side by side. When just running one 1960 on stereo though I run my slant. I like to have speakers shooting up at me as well speakers hitting my ankles.

Re: Slant vs. straight

Nothing sounds like a full stack except a full stack. The angled cabs seem brighter to me and the straight gives more punch. Together it's the full spectrum...I don't know why this is, but even when I stand to the side or even behind my stack I think this is the case, so it's not just that the angled cab is at head height.

One thing to be said, Is that a full stack in its original form(being one of each) looks really intimidating.

Cool Re: Slant vs. straight

I am surprised to see Slants have more votes than straights, cause I always hear ppl bitching about the sound hitting their face(which I like, because at loud gigs, it finds its way past my earplugs better).

Thanks for voting.

Re: Slant vs. straight

Not a valid "apples to apples" comparison IMHO. The ONLY possible way to do this would be to try one, then remove the speakers from that one into the other, then try it.

Re: Slant vs. straight

At this point all I have is a slant but I will eventually have two... I think two cabs sitting side by side looks really intimidating on stage. Two full stacks side by side would look mean too. But I'm good with one cab for now and a second when I get my new head.

Straight cab for gigging and a slant cab for home or band practice when I'm not up on a stage.

Re: Slant vs. straight

I think the original intended application for a slanted cab was for a half-stack,
to aim some sound upward filling the room, and as a sort-of monitor for the performer. Some people like it....some dont.

Placing a slanted cab up-top in a full-stack rig never seemed to make sense to me since it just blasts the sound at the ceiling.

The history of the "Marshall Stack" indicates sonic considerations were just never considered. Marshall originally had an 8x12 cabinet with the top angled "to give it some shape" according to Jim Marshall. Naturally this was too heavy, and the story goes Pete Townsend suggested cutting it in half so his roadies wouldn't quit. Thus we have the stack that has become the industry standard for shape: angled top, straight bottom.

How it sounded as far as the shape goes was incidental.

Hey just a side note... I was on Splawn Amps site the other day and I saw a "Hybrid" slant cabinet. Apparently the cab is angled like a 1960a cab but the baffle is straight. Any thoughts on these?

Seems pretty pointless IMHO. I guess if you want to have the look of the slant cab but not the actually slant then it would be worth it.

Yea I don't really much see the point either... The description pinpoints the straight baffle as the source of the tightened bass response. So I guess if you wanted a tighter bass response and the look of the slant cab, then that'd be a way to get what you want.

Oh yes, I know the story of how the stack evolved out of the 8x12 monster that the roadies had a problem with. But if you look at the way 4x12s were marketed since then, the slanted ones were very often sold in a half stack rig.

Most of the ones I've seen personally (gigs, concerts, studios) were slants in a half stack, and two straights in a full stack. Thats not to say you cant use either, or.

Yes they do.
Where there is a large-enough stage, many big-name guys set up that way.
I saw Peter Frampton last year and he was using three #1960 4x12s in a row
(I couldnt see what was powering them though).

I also saw a video of Jetrho Tull, and one of those guys was using four #1936 2x12s on tilt stands, next to each other horizontally.

I have a Fender 4x12 that is a straight cab, but is angled slightly upwards, similar to what you are describing.

Thanks, everyone for your input! I haven't been on the site for a week or two, and didn't realize that this thread would become this popular. I know it doesn't compete with "How to get girls", but the input is nice. Thanx

I think, thats just the opposette. The Splawn cabinet pictured, had a body which gives the appearance of the upper speaker pair being slanted, but the baffle is actually straight.
Your Fender is probably one of the type where the cainet is constructed straight but upper edge of the entire baffle is tilted back inside the frame a few inches, "slanting" all four speakers upward slightly. Many of the other brands make a cabinet model like this too.

ok, I see what you mean now. I think that is a bit obscene. Just choose one or the other. I really don't think something that is "masked" into something else is necessary. IMHO of course

Both of my 4x12's are straight cabs...just my preference...

Although I was told when I was younger that the slant cabs had cheaper speakers in the angle portion...

That's how it eventually ended up being made but it was Pete Townshend's previous discovery of getting feedback from a speaker waist high near the pickups that led to the eventual 8x12 stack. So his tone, attitude and intimidating backline were all considered.

Great article from this site: Pete's Equipment | The Marshall Stack | Whotabs | Pete Townshend

Talks about this topic down the page at:
"The “stack”
The stack derived from both a desire to project sound better and a desire to have an intimidating backline. In 1964, John first connected his Marshall JTM45 to, first one, then two side-by-side Celestion G12-loaded Marshall 4x12s. Pete followed this up by placing his Marshall 4x12 on a waist-high metal stand, thus generating considerable feedback to the guitar’s pickups. Next, possibly due to the small stages at the time, as well as to create an imposing visual force, Pete stacked one cabinet atop another, driven by his ’64 blonde Fender Bassman 50w head (gold sparkle grille, white round knobs), and thus the “stack” was born. The bottom cabinet was likely a dummy."

BTW for anyone who loves the band or early amp/guitar info this is the most comprehensive Who gear site with tons of vintage photos and info of all kinds of cool things!

I like the deeper punch of straight cabs plus i thin they look cooler for some reason.
