General wiring question...

Do cab makers general wire for series or parallel (or is it case by case)

I have an Avatar 8ohm cab and a Marshall 16 ohm. I was thinking if everybody was series, I could if desired parallel the Avatar to 16 ohms. Is this right?

It depends on the impedance rating of the speakers. Most 4x12 cabs containing speakers with matching impedance ratings are wired series-parallel so that total impedance = the impedance of one of the 4 speakers.

A 4x12 cab with -

Four 4 ohm speakers can be wired either series-parallel for a 4 ohm load or all in series for a 16 ohm load.

Four 8 ohm speakers can only be wired series-parallel for an 8 ohm load. This is because all four 8 ohm speakers in parallel would give you a 2 ohm load (too low) and all four 8 ohm speakers in series would give you a 32 ohm load (too high).

Four 16 ohm speakers can be wired either series-parallel for a 16 ohm load or all in parallel for a 4 ohm load.

A 2x12 cab with -

Two 4 ohm speakers is typically wired in series for an 8 ohm load

Two 8 ohm speakers can be wired either series for a 16 ohm load or parallel for a 4 ohm load

Two 16 ohm speakers is typically wired in parallel for an 8 ohm load
