How To Date A Cab Without Original Speakers?

I have a Marshall Cab I just picked up that the previous owner claimed to be a "1980's" Marshall cab. Its really beat up and only has 2 of the original 4 speakers in it but for $50 I couldn't say no.

I am wondering if there is a way to date the cab. Ill give you a brief description and post some photos later today.

Black Tolex
Basket Weave Cloth
Metal Handles
2 Jacks on the back
Gold Piping

I dont personally remember any 80s marshalls with the gold piping. Thats why I am asking.

Thanks

Metal handles indicates 1970's (older?). My 1982 cabinet is from January 1980 and has plastic handles.

Basket Weave, metal handles and gold piping,
sounds more like a late 60's cab to me, or it could be a RI.
Pictures of the inside will tell if it's a real BW cab.

I would also be interested in knowing weather or not its worth restoring. It going to sit in my Studio and probably never see the light of day again. It sounds AMAZING just the way it is, although the 15ohm / 8ohm speaker combo worries me.

That looks like an early 70's Chequerboard cab.

Re: How To Date A Cab Without Original Speakers?

that is an early 1971 cab! very nice score, especially for that price!!!! the handles alone are worth about £50.

71 was the last year for the metal handles and the first year for the checkerboard grill cloth. 72 was the year they introduced the thinner centre beam, and the plastic corner protectors.

it looks as though yours has a birch ply back panel too which is a bonus! I once owned a 1971 cab and it had a particle board back panel. The speakers were dated april 71 so im guessing yours is a couple of months earlier than that to still have that birch back.

Looks like an 11" logo on it. that is not original, it should have a 9" one.

Your cab is basically the same as a 60's basketweave cab (worth mega money) but with a different grill cloth. So you could get away with putting a basketweave grill on it and it would increase its value. go for the 'salt and pepper' cloth.

The second input is a DIY job but doesnt look too bad so I wouldnt worry about it.

I wouldnt retolex it as it will devalue it. you could have ago at patching up the exposed wood if you have any of the same tolex knocking about.

If you want some date correct speakers for it I have some G12M and G12H quads I am selling dated 1971. but these are pre-rolas so are not cheap! let me know if you are interested.

value varies greatly depending on the condition.

generally speaking you will get the same whether you split it for parts or just sell the whole thing.

id say about 1400 uk sterling for a good one. a lot less for a crap one.

have a look at marks guitar loft for some prices. bear in mind these are shop prices. you would be very lucky to get those prices on ebay.
