Restoration of a "1960s" cab...

Well i got what i think is a 1960s reissue cab... but upon opening it up, i was astonished.

It had what i think is 2 eminence speakers (8ohm), a celestion greenback (16ohm), and some random 8ohm speaker... its a mess. they werent even saudered! there was tape and all kinds of mess in there. and i think it was the culprit to blowing tubes and fuses in my amp.

but, i need to restore it. as fast as i can! and i figure if i do the inside, i might as well make over the whole cabinet.

so does anyone know any websites that are super easy to find everything im looking for? i need tolex, speakers, piping, all that mess. and a new grille cloth.

help me out!

A no questions asked Marshall 1960 cabinet can be has as cheap as $350; and in good shape can be had all day for $450 or even less. By the time you replace the "tolex, piping, speakers and all that mess" you'll be completely upside down on this. My advice is scour eBay, find four decent 12" speakers of the same ohms (or less than four and use what you have of the same ohms), and leave the rest. You'll have a perfectly usable cabinet and not spend more time or money than what it's worth.

And an empty pinstripe cab can get you $3.500 on Ebay.

the mismatched speakers with different impedances is definitely a culprit in blowing fuses in your amp. You must correct this. I would personally just sell all of them and start over but you don't have to do that. The 16ohm speaker among the 8's will not work.

1960 is just the model number, not a year or signifying any reissues.

When did you get it and how much did you pay for it? If you don't mind me asking. Got any pictures?

Also, depending on how old and in what condition, that Greenback has a possibility of being worth more than the cabinet and everything else. You should look into that.

How far away from Richmond are you? I got some family in Louisa which is 540.

Ah, but is this a vintage? He said "reissue 1960's"...I suppose the first thing to do is figure out exactly what it is!

$350? The last two that I bought, both this year, I paid $150 (JCM800 w/G12T-75), and $260 (mid 70's transitional cab w/later G12-65). Craigslist is your friend

Hopefully the poster didn't pay too much for that cab. But with used gear, everyone occasionally gets a lemon. And then you either fix it up and sell it, or it becomes a piece of furniture until your wife makes you get rid of it. So then you take it to your band's rehearsal room, and it sits around there until your band mates trash it, or somebody steals it. Circle of life...

No kidding! I paid $375 for my 1982 A with G12H80's. One on eBay now has an ask of $550! He's dreaming, but still...

I've never seen a uasable 1960 cabinet under $300 but obviously they're out there!

Re: Restoration of a "1960s" cab...

well see, i traded a newer 1960s cab for the older one because i thought the older one had a better sound to it and had somewhat better clarity to it, you know? and i'm sure if this cab still had all the original legit parts in it, it would be awesome. but i just found out also that the entire back cover is not the original part on the back... and usually 1960s cabs have 2 inputs on the back right? mine only has 1. i'm just thinking about begging my friend to let me buy his sunn cab off of him. haha but you think if i stripped it down i could maybe make some decent money off of it? because that would be awesome. haha

and i live close to blacksburg, dude. like around VA Tech and all that mess. You live in richmond? my band used to come through there every now and then, we played at the canal club. and we had a few shows at alley kats but they always fell through. haha
