Objects infront of your cab?

The other day I cranked my amp and I had a largeish box infront of my cab, I noticed I got a really nice reverb kinda sound, so I put it closer to my cab, where I got my amp to really growl, like it was being played on full volume in a large stone hall.

Now I'm back down to a lower volume and I moved the box a little further away, and it has a bit of a cranked sound, which is awesome

Any of you guys experimented with this kinda thing?

Re: Objects infront of your cab?

Yeah. I have that little Marshall battery amp, and I like puttining it in a bookcase cabinet, and I shut the wood door leaving about 2" of it open. The sound is amazing!!! It lends a nice singing quality to solos that you don't get in the open air.

Joe Bonamassa uses plexiglas shields in front of his cabs.

If you ever play a show, I will fly to Australia to see you bring a cardboard box as part of your setup!

That was Fucking hilarious....

what you are referring to with the cardboard box is nothing more than whats referred to as a "Beam Blocker"....its distributing the highs across a larger area
so the highs are not straight ahead or strait from the center of the cone
giving a more "warm" or even sound if you will

Re: Objects infront of your cab?

I think all the objcets in a room, and particularly the placement of the speaker can make a big effect. For example, for small combos that need more low end or are a bit too bright, placing them on the floor near a wall builds up the bass by reflections and gets the on axis treble beam out of your ears.

A blockage right in front could just absorb treble, but could also bounce sound in other directions, activating other surfaces in the room to good effect. It might be specific to each room though.

My 1x12 combo and cab have home-made beam blockers, about 5" diameter. On the cab, it was curing the beam but taking too much treble away, so I used a 5" diameter disk with a 2 1/2" hole in it. This is worth a try because you can test it with a piece of cardboard. It breaks up the beam but adds the sparkle back by letting the high treble out of the small hole (probably a gross simplification of several comlex effects!). This hole acts as a point source and spreads the treble fairly evenly outwards.

Re: Objects infront of your cab?

I would pay good money for that box if it had a famous dead rocker's signature on it. No, seriously now, Stevie Ray Vaughan used gaffers tape for a beam blocker. If I could find Stevie Ray Vaughan signature gaffers tape, I would be there!

Well, I'll go get endorsed by a cardboard box company, make it big and die. Then you can pay good money for some boxes.

Re: Objects infront of your cab?

Oh yeah

Now I've just faced my cab towards the corner, stops me from getting the funky sounding blast from the speakers, I get pure crisp tone now.

Before you know it, they'll move production overseas and the market will get flooded with those cheap Chinese boxes made from low quality cardboard.

I think only genuine vintage Marshall cardboard should be used. I hear their new cardboard is made in China and lacks the quality of the vintage stuff.

I read somewhere that when Slash was recording and came up with his "sound" during Appetite for Destruction, he wouldn't let anyone move anything around in the studio.

Yeah, I been hearing about that shit, apparently it just isn't reliable, and the tone is so... Papery.
