Nos tubes Vs new
supposing NOS GEC KT88s and current Sovtek KT88s....which of them will run the OT and will work it much less hard? Why? it's a matter of Volts or current?
I own an old '70 Major....it was mounted GEC KT88 ...and now the repairman has mounted smaller, lower, ugly Sovtek KT88s.....could the OT failed, damage or wear out earlier or the OT don't risk nothing....i don't know the parameters of both GEC and Sovtek |

Hi.
Reginald, I think Your paranoia about tubes and transformers are getting the better of you. Stop worrying and play the damn thing .If it blows it blows, nothing much can be done about it. Even though Sovteks aren't necessarily my first choice (living too close to the Big Red for comfort ), two of the six tubes in my Fame are Sovteks. If they're matched in any way, they're as good or bad as any other ones in the same price range.Regards Sam |

![]() I sincerely hope the repairman gave you back those "old" tubes!!! Otherwise you might want to do a google on the value of GEC KT88 tubes and compare that to Sovtek, and then decide whether you want to pay another visit to that guy and get your tubes back! Hint: I have seen matched pairs go for close to $800... and you had a quad. Unless you know those old tubes were bad - saw them test bad with your own eyes - you probably got ripped off.

Re: Nos tubes Vs new
I sell tubes and I buy from various sources. Right now, a pair of real Gold Lion KT88's are some of the most expensive tubes out there. Even if they are on their last leg, they are still worth a lot of money. Sort of like the time I had some mod work done on a 69 Les Paul Gold Top. I had the soapbars replaced with DiMarzio's. Funny thing, the luthier didn't give me my soapbars back. I wonder why?

Re: Nos tubes Vs new
Two identical threads, except one says "valves" and the other says "tubes."
You're not getting off to a very good start. People are giving you advice and you are completely ignoring it. If your English is bad, then maybe this isn't the best place to go with your "young kid" amp problems. No one likes to take a lot of time to answer your questions and then have you ask the same question over again. Pretty soon, no one will even want to help you.
