JCM800 Combo Speakers
Hello: I have a 4212 JCM800 combo. I believe it's from the late 80's. I bought it a year ago and the 2 speakers that is has are a greenback and another one that has a british flag painted on it. Anyone know the purpose of having 2 types of speakers and are both of these speakers good ones. I play Alternative type music and not any classic rock, blues or death metal. Are these speakers good for me or is there a better choice. I'm somewhat clueless on what is out there and figured I'd tap into the knowledge of this forum. Thanks for your help.

Re: JCM800 Combo Speakers
Got any pics?
![]() It's not all that uncommon to replace half of the speakers in a 4x12 cab with another, impedence-matched but different pair of speakers. This can add to the sound, as some speakers are more apt for clean tone and some for breakup.

Re: JCM800 Combo Speakers
Thrawn: I have a picture in my album under my profile. I looked the speaker up and it's a mojo british speaker.
I like the sound from my amp a lot. The thiing is until I bought this amp, I've never owned a great amp. People would consider my Fender tube amp good, but I'm not big on it. I don't play blues or classic rock so it doesn't give me the sound I like. That's why I can'y give a good answer on whether these tubes and speakers are good for me. They sound great, but any tubes in my Marshall would sound better than what I had and what I would compare it too. I would just hate to spend $800 on my JCM800 and not get it where it should be. I can't afford to just buy things and try them out though. That's why suggestions are very welcome by me. Sometimes people could say "you definitely don't want these o Hey, you may want to try these:" That's what I'm looking to hear. Thank you all so much |

Those type of comments are from people who tried something in hopes of achieving a certain sound, and the something they tried was missing something...wasn't completely what they liked, or it got them the sound they wanted. If you like the way your amp sounds as is, why mess with it? Other people's suggestions may very well not be what you like, and that's where you end up playing the game of "constantly buying things and not liking them", which as you know gets very costly. Just because someone else liked it and recommended it doesn't mean you'll like it. Everyone's ears are different. If the amp already has the sound you want, what's there to try? Just my $0.02.

Re: JCM800 Combo Speakers
Wilder: I knew as I was typing the last message that it sounded like such a vague question. I've heard other amps that sounded better. What I think I need to do is when I'm out and hear hear a sound I like better, I need to ask them what they've got in there. I think I should also figure out exactly the sound I want and then it's easier to get suggestions or get the right tubes/speakers to somewhat replicate that sound. My clean channel is real nice, much better than I thought it'd be from that amp that maybe I should just hold tight.
I just figured that if I listed what I had in there, one of the speakers or tubes might give the response of "Hey, that's shit, replace that for sure". From what I've heard from the forum is that it seems like I at least have decent guts in that amp. Although Frankie just said that the Celestion Greenback may be stock and can be improved. So, I'll ask the experts. What should I put in that other speaker that will match well with that Mojo British Speaker. I guess I'd want something that has a nice clean sound but can also deliver a nice dark, heavy type distortion. |

As far as people coming on and saying "Yeah that's shit, get rid of it and get something else"...that's that person's opinion based on THEIR experience with the product or what they've heard or read from others. Your experience with the same product may differ greatly from theirs or what they heard/read. Thing to keep in mind here is that everone's ears hear differently so what sounded like shit to one guy may have sounded like the holy grail to you. Only your own ears will tell you what sounds right or not. However, you may get farther if you post up something more specific, more along the lines of - "I'd like to get other people's opinions on 'such and such' product. Anyone ever use them?"

Re: JCM800 Combo Speakers
Like the thread on Tubes, thanks for setting me straight. And yes, I did mis-interpret Frankie's comment because I didn't realize that my Greenbacks were different than the ones he referenced. Since they are better than the stock ones it looks like I'm all good.
Just gotta replace those original Capacitators I guess. If I don't replace the Capacitators, could it ruin my amp?? |

More than likely won't, but as a tech I personally don't trust caps that are 20 years old or older. They make up 1/2 the power supply in your amp so they supply current just as much as the main supply that keeps them charged.
