Jmp + mg412???

Does anybiody know if my JMP 1971 50w will be compatible with an MG412 Cab? I know they're kind of low end but its about all I can afford currently and trust me, its better than what I'm running it through at the moment. Thing is I know they're generally recommended for us with Solidstate amps and I'm worried I'm gonna blow the speaks with my head.

Any help much appreciated.

I did it for awhile and it wasn't as bad as most people would think. Sounds a lot thinner than even a 1936 but it has nice dispersion which is a plus. Hands down a full size 4x12 would sound 10 times as big..

Re: Jmp + mg412???

Am I right in thinking that the speakers are fairly easy to change out? I know the ones that come with it come in for a bit of flak. Size wise its a half stack size, with head obviously, isn't it?

Re: Jmp + mg412???

MG cabs are smaller than 1960 cabs and smaller than a full size head. How wide is the JMP? The power rating is OK. Dcooper830 posted some videos of his mg half stack, where he upgraded the speakers and it sounds pretty good.

But if you are thinking of a new MG cab, youd probably be better off thinking of an old beaten up 1960 instead.

Re: Jmp + mg412???

Get a used 1960 cab, much better than the little MC412's. If it's all you can afford I totally understand. In the long run though, it would be better to sell the MC412 when you can afford to upgrade to the 1960. I would do that over upgrading the speakers. The 1960 cabinet alone is just built better, better wood, hardware...

As far as compatibility, yes, you can pretty much use any Marshall cabinet with any Marshall head. The only cabinets with low wattages are the ones with greenbacks, like the Vintage Modern cabs and the 1960AX/1960BX and 1960HW cabs. Still even those can handle 100w heads no problem.

As all have said so far, there's no problems doing this.........

...Save for the fact that it would be like enjoying the most expensive champagne you've ever had in a styrofoam cup. Get a 1960; you'll be so much happier!

Re: Jmp + mg412???

Excellent guys, thanks for the help, I have found a reasonably priced (if a little battered) 1960 Cab and will be getting that instead I think. At least it will have the vintage look!

Is a Marshall 1960 4x12 cab jcm 900 1960b likely to be compatible?

Re: Jmp + mg412???

oh yeah, there's not really a difference between a 1960 and JCM900 cab. There were a couple years though where the 900 cabs had different speakers in them, not exactly sure which but more than likely it will be the same as the standard 1960 cab which is the G12T-75 speaker. A is angled and B is straight. The bottom cabs have a more tighter response to the low end, just the way they are built. I like a 50w better through an angled cabinet personally but it will still sound good regardless.

Re: Jmp + mg412???

This is what I've gone for. Pretty battered and bruised but its a 1960 b 4x12, cost me £180 so not far off the price of the MG412, but it was sold to me as having all the original Celestions and apparently this guy has used it week in week out and its sound.

How easy is it to re-tolex them?

Re-tolex? I guess that means you're not going to be playing shows with it, huh? I don't think it's all that difficult. Looks ain't everything.

There's a guy on here named VintageHeadBox and others that are good at refinishing stuff like that. Actually, MartyStrat on here builds cabs as well. You should find them and ask them.

Re: Jmp + mg412???

That sounds like a good buy, and if you sell it again it will still be worth the same or more whereas if you spent your money on teh MG, youd only get half the money back used when you get sick of it and sell it.

Nah you're right, they're not everything, otherwise I'd have just got the MG412 and the tone and clarity is the whole point. Just thinking it might be a fun project to re-tolex it someday if it wasn't a difficult procedure. Still like you say, as long as the sound is right, fuck it, its all good. He has been quite honest with the fact its a bit battered anyway, so I'm going into it with my eyes open.

Thanks for all of your help guys, I'll let you know what the crack is when I've set her up and cranked it!

Re: Jmp + mg412???

Oh and yeah I will be gigging with it! I think more people will be looking at the head than the cab anyway. One or two people have said be careful cos some folks will probably try and half inch it.
