Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

I have a bunch of different cabinets and thought it would be fun to do a comparison of them through my Vintage Modern 2266. Same guitar & same settings on the amp.

Awesome comparison. Truly for vintage rock tones those greenbacks do it the most justice. The cabs with Vintage 30's sound great too.

Great job!

Re: Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

Love the G12C Tone. The Vintage 30s sound tinny in comparison. A cab with V30s/G12T should pretty good 'cos the G12T-75 cabs actually sounded pretty meaty.

Awesome dude.

Too bad you don't have a Dave Mustaine cab to try out too, they sound awesome.

Blind test.

JSX, V30, Greenbacks, and than 75's. Funny that I thought the JSX sounded the best, maybe I need those speakers? lol.

Very nice....Mine has the 75 watters, which sound fine, but the greenbacks are awesome.

Re: Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

This is another good test - we should make a stickied thread with a link to all the speaker tests. I agree that the Greenies win this one. Listening to this, and a few other demos on the web, you start to get an understanding of the relative differences, even though, depending on amps and settings, different cabs may sound best in in different tests.

For example, the general differerence from Greenback to V30, to me, sounds like the vocal difference from an 'ah' sound to an 'aw' ..if you see what I mean! And you can always hear how a G12T75 has more top end bite and less mids than the others.

On these tests, how loud was the recording and how were they miced?

John

This was recorded using a Canon HD cam + a Canon DM-100 external cam-mic (cost me over $200). The mic was pointed straight at the cab about 2-3 feet away. Obviously making a professional recording and using hi-end mic's and recording software would give better results but just lugging the cabs in & out and up & down stairs was work enough for me
The volume on the amp was way over bedroom level. Master volume was set at 5 and the amp is the 2266 which is the 50w version.
My main goal for this demo was to be able to hear the differences between the cabinets which could be achieved using this process.

The "winner" in my opinion is the 425a with the Greenbacks. I do feel I get the best tone out of that cabinet and can clearly understand why this is the matched cabinet for the VM. The G12T-75 sounded thin on the recording but way more ballsy in person.
As with most cabinets I would have to dial in the Eq that would be the best fit for the cab (adding mids when using G12T-75 and dialing back the mids when using V30's ..) if I were to use other cabinets than the 425A

Re: Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

Awesome comparison, thanks for making the effort.

Yeah, the Greenbacks sound best, but they need a little bottom end thump. I never heard of G12C's, I thought GB's were G12M's.

I'd love to hear the G12H in the comparison too.

This is from the FAQ over at the VM forum:

The G12C speakers are exclusive to Marshall and can only be purchased from Marshall.
The G12C is a G12M but voiced after a particularly nice vintage reference we (Marshall) had access to. We couldn't call it a G12M because that was already taken obviously, so we called it G12C, which simply stands for G12 Ceramic. It is exclusive to the SUPER100JH Limited Edition Hendrix 1982A and B cabs and the Vintage Modern Series.

Would be interesting to know if the sound is the same with the same elements but in other cabinets from like, Randall, Mesa/boogie and Engl.

That was a great sound, especially from the Greenbacks... It would be really interesting if you could make one of these videos for your 2203X, that would be really cool...

Cabinet construction has a lot to do with tone as well, so they would retain very similar qualities if they had the same speakers but they would still sound different.

Again, I love this video.

My ears tell me G12C Greenies are more pleasing to me. The Satch cab - not feelin' that EQ curve AT ALL.

Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Cheers!

Re: Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

yes , the greenbacks sounded the best to my ears , but to be fair it was recorded
on a cheap mic etc . if you were to take this to a real studio and spend some time
with different mics you might have different opinions on several other cabs .

cool video , it would take alot of work to make it .

Re: Vintage Modern through a bunch of cabinets

I have the 425a, which I love ... but I also really liked the V30's in this video.

Nice job.

Along these lines, I'd love to hear a comparison w/the 425a/b next to a 1960ax/bx w/the other greenbacks (C v. M).

Im still a vintage 30 fan.

That little riff you do at the end of each test, is it from the final countdown solo?

Actually the mic cost me almost $300 ... price not reflecting the quality as it is a special designed mic that fits with the camera. Canon ripoff ... but hey it's a lot better than the built in camera mic.
But totally agree that recording with studio technology would definitely give a better result.

Busted !!
I play that song in one of the bands I'm in and that little ditty has always eluded me as far as learning the whole solo. The rest of the solo was pretty straight forward to learn but I've been too lazy too learn the whole thing.
So I was practising that part and thanxs to the videorecording I now got it
