More on Celestion speakers
Hi folks... Newbie to this forum. I have a question that I'm hoping a few of you might be able to give me some input on, but first some backround.I owned a JCM 800 50 watt for many years but sold it in 1996.. While I loved the brown crunch sound, it never had quite enough gain for me.
I just purchased a modded 1980 JMP Mark II Master Volume 100 watt 2203 amp head at GC, here in Los Angeles. It has all the gain I will ever need. Anyway, I've been going back and forth on speakers for this puppy. After listening to the clips on the Celestion site, I'm moving more towards the Vintage 30s... One thing though, I played the amp through the EVH cabinet at Guitar Center, which is loaded with the 20 watt EVH 12' Celestions and I'll be darned if I didn't love the way they sounded. I was using my 1974 Strat and an AnalogMan Sunface NKT 275 pedal ( like the Arbitor Fuzz Face) that I brought with me to make the final decision on the amp. Anyway, these EVH 12"ers have a cool way of breaking up that for lack of a better description, reminded me of that verse sound that Leslie West got in Mississippi Queen..a truly amazing powerful mountain of sound. I may go with this cab, but I'm not totally sure yet. My question is... does anyone know if this 4 12 cabinet, loaded with these 20 watt EVH Celestions would be able to handle this 100 Marshall? Seems like I might need a full stack rather than just one 4x12 cab. What is holding me back is for aesthetic purposes, I would rather match my amp with a 4x12 Marshall cab.. but the problem is, the Marshall cabs I'm looking at don't come loaded with Vintage 30s. I am seeing them loaded with Celestion G12H Heritage Greenbacks.. and I didn't care for those G12H greenback clips on the Celestion site. And maybe I'm nutz, because I'm reading that the G12H (or is the G12m ) greenbacks are very similar to the EVH 12" speakers. Ultimately, I may have to bring the amp back in to GC and A/B a number of cabs. One thing I know, I won't be getting another Marshall 1960a cab... I went that route in the 1990s.. Nothing special about that cabinet, except the price. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.. I dig this forum. Chris F. |

Re: More on Celestion speakers
according to the evh cab specs it will handle 100 watt heads so i would say if u like it, plug that marshall into it!
i agree with u on the greenbacks, i like the v30s myself! i got lucky and scored a marshall jcm 900 lead 1960 cab that had v30s installed by the previous owner! its sweeet!! |

Re: More on Celestion speakers
thanks, stryker.... not sure why Celestion didn't do a proper a/b comparison on their speakers (i.e; same guitar, same guitar lick or chord as heard with the various speakers )... the way they broke it down, by various types of music and various guitars, makes it a bit hard to really tell the differences.

Re: More on Celestion speakers
yeah they coulda done a better job! eminence does a better comparison on their website. but even then its hard to appreciate how they sound without hearing them live in person. and broken in speakers sound better than new ones. if u like that evh cab then go with your ears, not with what everybody says is good.

Re: More on Celestion speakers
yep.. I loved it. I'll probably end up with the EVH cab. those speakers seem particularly suited for this amp.. I'll probably buy the floor model, as well. those speakers are most definitely broken in.

Re: More on Celestion speakers
Chris -
I am a big fan of great tone, even though tone varies from ear to ear. I am also a big fan of Marshall amps and their growl, even though I have owned others such as Bogner, Mesa, Fender, etc. I currently play a Marshall 1987xl head thru a Bogner 4x12 straight cab with Vintage 30 speakers. I have played thru a 1960BX Marshall cab which had the greenback re-issue speakers that were 25watt called "Classic G12M" greenbacks. The Celestion G12EVH speakers in the EVH III cabinet are the same speaker as the "Heritage G12M" greenbacks with the exception of a black can instead of green can and the EVH logo. They are both 20watt speakers and share the exact specs, per the Celestion website. You have to watch out when people just say greenbacks because they maybe talking about a "Classic G12M" instead of a "Heritage G12M" and not realize that these are different speakers and sound different. To my knowledge, Marshall only puts 25watt Classic G12M greenbacks in all their 4x12 cabs that are greenback loaded. You can verify this on their website by looking at the spec page for the cabs, all the greenback models say 25watt speaker. Maybe they do this so the total cab wattage is not below 100watts. Who knows.... Also, when I played a Bogner head, it sounded better with Classic Lead 80watt speakers or G12-75 75watt speakers than it did with lower watt speakers like Vintage 30 60watt or Heritage G12H 30watt and so on. The reason I mention this is to support the idea that you must take your head in and plug up the cab to really get a feel for what it will sound best with. I was looking at an EVH III in GC last week and while there I plugged a Marshall 1959 handwired head into the EVH III cab to compare sounds with the G12EVH (20watt), Vintage 30 (60watt), Heritage G12H (30watt), and G12-75 (75watt) speaker cabs that they had in the store. They didn't have any Classic G12M speakers in a cab to compare that day. The G12EVH speakers sounded so awesome once I got the volume up enough to drive the speakers. It sounded much much better than the EVH III head on channel two. I am going to change out my 60watt V30s for some 20watt greenbacks really soon. If you can A/B a Marshall cab with greenbacks and an EVH III cab with greenbacks you will much prefer the EVH III and this is only because they have different speakers in them. Good Luck and I hope this helps and wasn't too wordy..... ..mike |

Re: More on Celestion speakers
hi im havin the same dilema, i was lookin at this new vintage modern cabs they have G12C 25 Watt Celestion Greenbacks, suposelly this are the speaker designed to fit the new jimmy hendrix stack, it might be a good match, but i hate the color (purple!!!), i think i still goin to go with the 1960A and change the grill cloth (for the vinatge gray one) and expirement with diferent speakers later on. I dont know im still unshure about it..

Re: More on Celestion speakers
I agree with Coldsteal2, the G12C Celestion speakers found in the 425 series cabinet are great speakers. I currently run a JVM410H through a 425B cabinet and the sound is fantastic. The speakers can handle any volume I set, but they can also handle the high gain channels that the JVM produces. I know that the color may be a turn off, and for me, mixing a predominantly black head case with a predominantly purple cabinet was not my first choice, but I could not believe the sound I got from this combination. So all I can say is try out as many different cabs as possible, then decide.
