Technical Question or not..Please help

hi guys, i have a 4x12 100w cab loaded with greenbacks. ive noticed that nearly all cones are torn but despite of the damage, the sound is still superb. Im not very comfortable though knowing the speakers' condition. My question is this, if one or say two of the speakers died down, will the remaining speakers work? speakers are wired in series. thanks

Re: Technical Question or not..Please help

Hi.

Wired in series? Are You sure?

For a tube amp, series wiring is usually not recommended as in the case of a failure, an open connection (=no load) occurs, and the PT, or the tube(s), or both can bite the dust.

IOW, IF Your speakers are wired in series, then just only died speaker will result a dead silent cab (and probably a dead silent amp too, if tube).

I do know about the possibility of a shorted speaker voice coil, but I have never seen that in a woofer, but I've only been in the trade for 25 years or so. Anything's possible.

Regards
Sam

If it's a Marshall cab then you're speakers are almost certainly wired in series/parallel.
A speaker will continue to work with a cone tear. The sound may or may not be affected, but usually it is by producing a nasty, flabby distortion.
One torn speaker wont stop the others working even if they were all wired in series, a torn speaker is a mechanical problem not an electrical one.

What knid of vlumes do you play at? You may not be moving the cone enough to notice the sonic affect of the tear.

If it's not bothering you then , but you can get cone damaged speakers re-coned and they will sound even more
