Marshall 2x12 - Worth it?
Hello,
I am looking to buy a 2x12 speaker cabinet to go with my JMP 100w head. I am here because - in my heart of hearts - want to purchase a Marshall 1936 cabinet. With that said, I have been reading many BAD reviews of this cabinet, with respect to cheap fabrication. Would it be in my best interest to go somewhere else - maybe like an Orange or Bogner? This cabinet would be used in a touring band (and studio) and I want something durable that sounds good. I am looking for honest replies please. Thanks. |

Re: Marshall 2x12 - Worth it?
I use a 1936 cab with my DSL50 head. I love it. I don't play in a band but it's lighter than the 1960 cab. I thinks its built solidly and I have had no problems in over a year. If you want another suggestion...look at the Carvin Legacy 2x12 or 4x12 cab. They are great for the money and are loaded with Vintage 30s.

Re: Marshall 2x12 - Worth it?
I used a 1936 for about 4 months. Had no probs with the construction and quality - that's all fine. Swapped out the G12T's for greenbacks which improved the sound but it still felt not quite right. Couple weeks ago picked up a 1960a and loaded it with 4 x greebacks and the improvement in the sound and tone is hugely obvious. I'm a realitive noob and it was THAT obvious! I don't know if it's because it fills the room better or the extra cab volume coupled with dynamics of the 4 speakers somehow work to smooth/round out the sound more (someone else more tekkie can answer that) but it makes a helluva difference.
IMHO if you can stretch to a 4x12, DO IT!! and just suffer hauling it around.. |

4x12 is a distinctive sound. 8x12 is better if you have a big room! LOL 2x12 may be loud enough, but for me that's for recording or playing in a tiny hall. Impact wise, 4x12 is the minimum requirement! It helps that I have a 50 watt and not 100 watt amp....

Re: Marshall 2x12 - Worth it?
I made a few mods to my 1936 cab.... i took the back off and tightened the screws that hold the baffle board down.... then got some sealer and sealed around the edges of the baffle. Then i tightened down the speakers equally but not too tight.
This might not sound like much, but for only half and hours work it gave the cab a more thunderous tone with more bottom end. Im looking at getting a 4*12 1960ax they sweeter than sweet!!! haha |

The 1936s are cool cabs. Its the MCs you dont want- theyre made of MDF,or fake wood.

OK,there is a BIG difference in plywood or MDF.Amd some people like MDF for certain reasons. Some dont.I dont. Some do. Plywood-it resonates, errr,it is more vibrant and alive sounding.Great for enjoying your hard earned tone. MDF is dead, sterile sounding-but,some guys like that kind of response when it comes to using a cab that they are going to be mic'ing up a majority of the time. Maybe, have a cab for rehearsing and recording made of plywood and a cab made of MDF when playing live where it doesnt matter of the cab wood resonates.

Re: Marshall 2x12 - Worth it?
One other important factor is that that 2x12 cabinet is only 12" deep and the 4x12 is 14" deep. That makes for a big difference in low end response. The wood type used, inside area volume, speakers, cabinet, depth, etc... all effect the tonal response. Its subjective as to what is better. The Avatar Vintage is a good, lower cost 2x12 and one of the best is probably the Bogner OS 2x12.
