Re: Big M (70's Marshall cabs)
Made in America? Dude WTF. All Marshall products are made in England, ALWAYS.
Does the Big M logo look anything like this Marshall JTM-100 (1966) Big M logo, Extremely Rare - eBay, Electric, Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar, Musical Instruments. (Eindtijd 23-jun-09 21:18:34 CEST) ? It may very well be a PA speaker but I can't tell you what speakers are inside it if I can't see it. These things if legit and in great condition they are worth a small fortune. I also thing that these were made for the German market but I'm not positive. I don't know much about the Big M series, but I do know they're ultra rare.

so you may be right. My point is that the BigM from the german period, and the US period is very different, exept for the name. |

Re: Big M (70's Marshall cabs)
I know my history, Marshall's only factory is and always has been in England. Milton Keynes, England. I can put a Marshall logo and some tolex on my vacuum cleaner, that don't make it a Marshall...
So yeah, you're cab could've been made in NY but if so it's not a Marshall. :::::sigh:::::

I can imagine that there may have been some "assembly" of certain models done at the the Long Island plant before they went out to stores. Now depending on your point of view it could be called US-made. Just like some Nissan cars are assembled in Canton Missisippi, therefore some US federal offices consider it an American car, although many people dont. Many Chryslers were assembled in Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit river, but the same people call it an American car not a Canadian car. |

Re: Big M (70's Marshall cabs)
In the 70's to the 80's the U.S. distributor was Unicord. I'm pretty sure the end of that deal was when you saw the end of the JCM800 or the 6550 in a Marshall, whichever came first. KorgUSA is the U.S. distributor as of today. They do not assemble or build anything for Marshall they just handle technical support to authorized warranty repair centers and store parts and products in a warehouse for further distribution.
Skip to 8:50. Fully assembled, boxed, packaged, ready to ship. 100% in Milton Keynes, England.

to the 4x12" cab was the way to go. They made these cabs in Long Island and they had Eminence speakers. Models were M2412 Lead (4x12") and M212F Bass (2x12") cabs. Both were 150w. These cabs were made for the then new solid state lead and bass heads. Production was for a year or so. The cabs price were 30% less then an UK built 4X12", but was no success. They took the same name (BigM) that was used for German import amps in the 60's. In the 60's a German trumpet manufactor owned the trademark Marshall, so Jim Marshall had to buy the rights to get them named Marshall in Germany. Last edited by janarn; 08-06-2009 at 05:51 AM. |

This could be just one of the reasons they broke off the contract and went for another US distributor. Never bite the hand that feeds.
