Playing 'name that speaker'...
(Posted on another forum also. I thought you knowledgeable readers might be able to educate me too)
Hi all, New forum member. I have a YJM100 on the way (was able to grab a new one from Sweetwater), and I'm picking out the cab I want to match it up with. In my hunt for a treble booster to match it up with, I found the clip below. Most likely going to throw a BSM FireBall in front of it, to add some variety to the 'DOD 250/308'-like driver that's built in. Can someone take a listen and tell me if you're hearing G12t-75 or greenbacks/g12H? I'm listening to the first 1:30 min of the track. I've got a general idea about it, but wanted to run it past some other sets of ears. http://www.treblebooster.net/sounds/fireball/2.mp3 Notes on the recording - On "Blackmore´s Boogie" Joe used the BSM Fireball on the opening riff and chordal stuff along with one of his Custom Shop ESP Strats thru a 1971 50 watt MARK II non-master volume Marshall amp that used to belong to Yngwie Malmsteen (that Joe owns now). The rest of the track has an old grey DOD 250 preamp on much of it on the single note stuff. Thanks all, and happy jamming. Strat. |

Re: Playing 'name that speaker'...
They sound so much like G12H30's in the bass that I would bet on it. But they seem to have the bite of 75's.

As far as what Mickey said above about the 75w speakers, there are actually three sound samples on the product webpage. I've included the whole comments section below, but the end result this this... The 75w are called out specifically in the first track (which strangely enough is a very good 'hendrix' through a 75w. Freaky.). The second track didn't say, so I looked at the guys equipment on his webpage and it turns out he has cabs with greenback 30, and cabs with 75w. So not sure which he used for this track. Again, not life or death by any means, and I just appreciate any input anyone that happens to read this thread gives. Thanks again all, Strat ------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to Joe Stump joestump.com for the soundfiles. On "Strat Sorcery" Joe used the BSM Fireball for the lengthy end solo. For this song Joe used a 1979 blond maple neck Fender Stratocaster, a nice guitar with ash body but not heavy like many later 70`s Strats, with a scalloped neck and HS-3 pickups into a 50 watt non-master early 70`s Marshall head and newer Marshall cabinet with 75 watt celestions (presence: 0 / bass: 4 / mids: 6.5 / treble: 6). He also used a Boss Phase Shifter stompbox. The amp was miked with a Shure SM-57 and a Royer mike. Additionally Joe used a Fender 68 reverse reissue Strat on the rhythmn track, so you hear two guitars - one with the boss phase shifter and one with a Dunlop roto-vibe. On "Blackmore´s Boogie" Joe used the BSM Fireball on the opening riff and chordal stuff along with one of his Custom Shop ESP Strats thru a 1971 50 watt MARK II non-master volume Marshall amp that used to belong to Yngwie Malmsteen (that Joe owns now). The rest of the track has an old grey DOD 250 preamp on much of it on the single note stuff. On the live version of "Still I´m Sad" Joe played his ESP Custom Shop Strat into the Fireball, to beat the hell out of his Marshall JCM 2000 DSL |

Re: Playing 'name that speaker'...
Well, Joe was cool enough to actually respond to a email I shot him. Here's the reply...
Hey, yeah I almost always use 75`s and I am on that track. I have several old 70`s basket weave cabs with 30 watt greenbacks and 25 watt goldbacks and those sound great with certain Marshall heads I own , but for the most part it`s my newer cabs with 75`s. New track Pistoleros from the new record on youtube, great tones check it out (just search Joe Stump 2012) Thanks all the best Joe Stump Well, found my answer. Very cool guy. Strat |
