your final word on WGS speakers
Hi everyone!
I like the offerings of WGS. Being a celestion guy i noticed they have celestion like speakers or "clones " basicly. I was thinking about trying these in a laney cab which has very dull sounding h&h speakers imho. Should i stick celestion? I have 2 g1265 speakers that came from an old 2204 combo. I was going to sell them because i felt they were too warm for my taste. I really dont care too much for vintage 30s feeling too ice picky with my modded amps. I was thinking about keeping the 65watters and pairing them in an x pattern with greenbacks. After seeing the wgs site i liked that they claim to be American made and some here say they are great and some say they are nasally? Should i stick with celestions or try these wgs speakers? You all been "in the loop" for awhile and have experience with both brands. Can you please enlighten me with your thoughts and findings. Im thinking of sonething full n crisp to compliment the 65's warmer mellowness. |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
they sound like VINTAGE ORIGINAL celestions. pre rolas and english made V30's.
people will argue V30 difference but point out without hesitation the iherant smoothness of the veterans over the V30's well, i've used ALL OF THEM and to my ears the veteran 30's sound IDENTICLE TO MY ORIGINAL ENGLISH MADE V30's. but they sound far less harsh than the new era of chinese made v30's (where many fail to see these differences i must add the MAGNET WEIGHTS ARE ALSO different on the chinese V30's than the English counterpart ) so there are very clear (to me) differences in chinese V30's and English V30's.V30/ENGLISH=Veteran 30 WGS. the green beret's sound like a brand new/unused pre rola greenback to me (or i maybe mean Rola here...i tend to missword on things like this one) but the original and coveted greenies...that's what the berets sound like. they all sound like the BEST of Celestion speakers before they got cheap and they cost much less. so YES i say BUY BUY BUY. imo they can't be beat all around. Re: your final word on WGS speakers
Thank you for your reply. I was leaning towards wgs. Im thinking the berets would complimeny my 65s. I was also noticing they had alot of different models.
With celestion,,, i was torn between greenbacks, evh, or the lynchback? I know wgs has clones of these... Which model would you reccommend? Im going to use the 2 (65watter) speakers and was thinking green berets to add a crisp but warm bite to the cab. Please Let me know what you think ") Thanks |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
You will find many WGS fans here. I really like the Vet30 combined with a 65, also you might consider the Invader - higher power handling "greenback" style speaker. I posted some comparison clips last year:
Speaker comparison - can you tell?

i like grenbacks and V30's or vet 30's and berets but i like a bright tone. for what you want i think you're already heading in the right direction. but whatch for the sensetivity being too mismatched. the lower DB one (even if it's 3x the wattage) will sound quieter next to the higher DB speaker. so if it's more than 1 i'd definitely do X pattern. just my opinion though. |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
I never thought about that ( sensitivity rating) . Thanks for the tip! I hear people striking gold with g1275/greenback x -pattern combo. This is the kind of thing i am going for. Like a custom blend.
I will check out that comparison recording to thanks

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
I have a 2x12 Sourmash Cab with a Green Beret and a Veteran 30 that's amazing.. I have Tone Tubbies, Celestions,Webers, and jensens back in boxes on the shelf.. I've heard them all since the beginning starting playing in 1963..
WGS are the best I've had.. I just had Bob @ Sourmash make a 2x10 combo cab for my JTM45 with a G10C and G10CS (one ribbed and one smooth cone)and these 10s are killer too..

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
Wow! Sounds like WGS is the winner!
I like the idea of supporting the underdog. I am playing thru some really good sounding Marshalls and i want the speakers to compliment the great sound of these amps. I am working on my own amp design too and saw on WGS 's site that a few decent companies are using their speakers. PRS being one of them, and he is from my home state of Maryland and he knows tone and quality. Then with you guys here giving them a thumbs up that pretty much told me i was in the right direction So,,, thank you all for help! I read alot of posts here before i joined and i am pretty confident you members here know whats good or bad! WGS it is. |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
Try out your 65's before you sell and if you're not happy then sell them and buy whatever...
I was gassing for speakers for years and finally felt relieved when I tried some Greenbacks. Now I have a quad. |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
I have had my 65watters in a tubeworks 2x12 for over 10 yrs. I rarely play thru them but they are really nice sounding. I was going to put them on ebay but reading everybodys experiences made me think about keeping them. They actually sound great but a little tired to my ears. That tiredness in the sound might be the well broken in warm celestion sound people have raved about for years
![]() sittin right here under my nose! Now that i decided WGS will be the company i am going with,,, i need to decide the complimentary speakers to complete the x pattern in my laney cab. The h&h speakers in it now sound like theres blanket over it. I need to decide! Im thinking gbacks (berets)! How do green berets sound with amps with resonance circuits? One thing about my sound is i like it robust, biting and ballsy |

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
I have a Reaper, to me it sounds the way you describe. But I only use a 1x12, I'm sure more of them would be awesome.

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
Yea! as much as I hate buying Chinese anything if their speakers were better you can bet your ass I'd use them but they're not.. and Bob at Sourmash is very cool about anything you want custom.. Don't get discouraged if he doesn't answer emails as fast as some or the phone.. He's a small company and has a life, puts his family first and I like that too..

My shop is right down the street and i got hella amps to plug into. i would love to hear them with my Marshalls especially since they are my main amps.Thursdays are always that boring day in the middle of the week when everyone stays home. We could get you down here & let people hear them on the forum! I got an awesome unmodded 2203,,, my "billybladesdapirate " marshall mods lol,,, splawn,,, boogie mk3,,, carvin, engl,, ok my finger is tired ") Collecting and studying great tone is my drug! Costs alot less too

Re: your final word on WGS speakers
I have a couple stacks worth of real 65s
AND a couple stacks worth of WGS 65s in various cabs/ combos The WGS have really delivered . Compared to the celestions , the WGS may be a slight bit brighter ,but then that's comparing new speakers to 30 year old ones I tried their green berets in Chinese ac30,but that amp didnt stick around long enough for me to really get into those speakers
