custom 1x12 speaker in 2x12 cab?
i've got me a tsl60 head and wanted to know if anyone is using a 1x12 cabinet that still matches the similiar 29.5 width (most 1x12 cab are shorter).
and i was thinking of using a 2x12 empty cab and having one speaker custom installed while closing off the hole of the other speaker to make it just 1 speaker in a 2x12 typical size. anyone try this? i'm currently using an upgraded mc212 2x12 cab (upgraded speakers) about 50lbs but wanted to have a smaller and lighter weight cab with 1 speaker. thanks, ken |

Re: custom 1x12 speaker in 2x12 cab?
V30 is 65 watts, not saying you cant do it but youre not leaving yourself alot of elbow room if you plan on cranking a 60 watt amp. I would look for a 75 - 100 watt speaker for that project. One that comes to mind is the Warehouse Speaker Retro 30 at 75 watts. Its a higher watt V30 clone. Another is the Jensen C12K, has lots of mids like a V30. Also Celestion has higher watt speakers like the G12K I was always curious about and the 7080. Eminence has a slew of choices too but I'm not as familiar.
Something I thought I'd mention in parting, I'm cranking a 50 watt amp through a 2x12 of greenbacks which is 50 watts for a couple years no problems yet. People argue that Celestions are rated conservatively and can handle alot more than rated. Celestion says this too. So if you really want the V30 you can take a chance and it will probably work out but theres no guarantee. Edit: I just looked online at Eminence and they got some real high watt speakers like 120 - 150 watts. Do some research and figure out what is their V30 clone. And they are priced affordably well under $100 each.

I dunno why you'd want to convert a 2x12 into a 1x12.
You might regret that after hearing it. Much better to just pick up a separate 1x12 and compare first. Then you could maybe return the 1x12 if you felt it left something to be desired.

Re: custom 1x12 speaker in 2x12 cab?
I used a single Hellatone 60 in a 2x12 for the longest time while trying to figure out what I wanted to pair it with. I just put a piece of plywood over the open speaker cutout.

Re: custom 1x12 speaker in 2x12 cab?
Have you thought about just getting something custom made?
I wanted to make a 2 - 1x12 stack using marshall cabinets. I had a head box custom built my sourmash amps for my Ceritone, to match the cabinets. You can do the opposite. Have cabinets made to match the head. They are surprisingly affordable, and they do a good job. Sour Mash Guitar Cabs I don't work for them or anything, I just liked the quality and Bob can answer any questions you have. Here is a pic of the head he made for me. |

but i wanted to try something lighter for smaller gigs but keep my marshall head. a cab big enough to match my head, but smaller and lighter by using the 1x12 idea. had an estimate and a local builder said he could do a size of a 2x12 but put 1x12 with a total weight of 35lbs. that's almost a 15lb difference. i dunno yet. |

Re: custom 1x12 speaker in 2x12 cab?
Thanks, Sounds great too. I put a V30 in the bottom cab and a greeback in the top.
I can't crank it yet, I am having an ear issue, but after the operation...I'm gonna melt the paint. I got the amp guts on CL for $550. It is a Ceritone Lead 50. The head box was $180 from Sourmash. I should have gone with something fancier, like red snakeskin, but I went for the classic Plexi look. ---------------------- I don't know if that is too expensive, total, for a knockoff, but I always wanted a 2 - 1x12 stack that rocked...not a mini that sounds like a mini. ![]() I'm happy with it. I guess that is what counts. |

They make anything you want. Bob is really informative about specs too.
You should e-mail him or give him a call. I think mine is 23.5" wide, if I remember. I think I drove him nuts with spec questions, but he took the time to answer all of my questions and make it exactly per what I wanted. I think he is one of those guys that actually cares about doing it right for you. you don't run into that too much. Check out his web site and you can see some of the nice stuff he does. |
