Re: Warehouse speakers

Yup I actually bought 6 of the V30 clones and 2 of the Classic 80s. I haven't tried the 80s yet but the V30 clones sound great.

Re: Warehouse speakers

I have a couple Veteran 30's. Sound great. I think I may pick up the Green Berets for my 212 cab.

Re sale won't be as good as Celestions in a cab if that matters to ya. Speakers sound great though.

Re: Warehouse speakers

I slapped a set of Veteran 30s in a MG-412 cab and it's a great sounding cab now!!!

Only thing is..... it made the cab a lot heavier so I had to install some casters on it. But I'm not complainin'!

I'm not sure if the Veteran 30's sound the same as the Celestion Vintage 30s. It's hard to tell.

They have all the great growl and mids. Thick chunky low end. And crisp clear highs.

But I don't think they sound quite the same.

They're damn good speakers I know that for sure!

They're $65 each now. Fortunately I bought mine when they were only $45 each.

It was a good buy and I don't regret it for a second!!

I was thinking they are a tad darker/smoother sounding to me but it is real close to the V30 which I like too. I got mine for $45 as well.

Re: Warehouse speakers

Thanks guys, I was just wondering because a cab that I was looking at was loaded with the Veteran 10's and ET-65's.

Re: Warehouse speakers

I have four of the g12 65s and they sound a lot like the newer celestion G12t-75s. Of course if you're a fan of the vintage 30s sound then the veteran 30s sound amazing. I'm getting ready to X pattern two veterans with my 65s.

Yeah man, cool, I hope this deal falls through because I am getting sick of not having a matching cab with one of my amps!

Re: Warehouse speakers

I tried a Veteran 30 and ET-65 pair during a show and I thought they sound too dull for me. YMMV

Oh, thanks for the reply. It's nice to hear from someone with experience with that combination.

To be fair, I used them in a closed back cabinet in a boomy room. My main complaint though was that I couldn't hear myself well at all with the Veteran 30 & ET-65 combo. When I play that same room with V30s in an open back cab, I don't have a problem. Part of the change was certainly due to the open back cab but I think the main point is that during live shows, high end is your friend. When playing home solo, a full range speaker sounds nice and smooth but once you are playing live, guitar needs a good midrange and enough high end to sit well in the mix with the drums and loud bass. The WGS speakers sound fine at home but the problem is too smooth during a live gig isn't always the best. I perhaps should have given them another chance but I didn't. I had the same problem with Heritage G12-65s. Absolutely gorgeous speaker alone but a bit too smooth during a show. You need to sit well in the mix. I think this is one of the problems with V30s. They don't necessarily sound great at home but really cut well in a live show and mic up really well. That makes them very practical for live performance. That may be one of the reasons there is so much love/hate for that speaker. It depends on where you were listening to it, home or during a live gig. I play in a cover band and I'm trying to sit in the mix with drums, bass and keys. If you are a blues trio with guitar, bass (not overly loud and lose) and drums then maybe some of the smoother speakers may work better. Bottom line is, how do you sit in the mix. You really shouldn't make a final decision on a speaker IMO until you have had it out live.

Very good post especially about the differences of home playing vs playing out live. V30's are great for cutting in a band mix.

If you are just a home player cutting in a mix won't matter to you.

Paragraphs are your friend and mine for reading...

I agree with you. In general, it's hard to judge your gear and settings until you play it with the band.

I'm curious if you mic your amp at gigs? I have a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker that I thought sounded pretty good in my Mesa 1x12 3/4-back cab on stage. But then at one gig I used a Rocktron Velocity S112 speaker cab. That has a very dark speaker that I think really only sounds good when its pointing at your head. The soundman made a comment about how my tone was much better that night, it wasn't "harsh" like my usual tone. Note that I never point my mic at the center of the speaker where the sound is always too harsh and bright.

These days I always try to point the speaker at my head so I can hear a better representation of what the microphone is hearing. When I do that, I end up toning down the treble. I'm also more inclined to use my WGS Veteran 30 speakers due to their smoother, darker tone.

But the problem with dialing in the tone to sound good on-axis is that it often sounds muffled off-axis. My other guitarist plays a Marshall 1936 cab which is a closed-back 2x12. The highs really fall off quickly when you move to either side of the cabinet.

I try to alleviate that problem by using:
- Weber Beam blockers (Weber Beam Blocker -- high frequency diffuser)
- Jay Mitchell's idea (http://jay-mitchell.com/dirmod.html).
- A front-vented (a.k.a detuned) cab like a Freda Live (Freda Live! Guitar Cabinets featuring Powersound design - Home) or Port City Wave (|| Welcome to Port City Amps ||).
- From what I read, a Mills Acoustics cab seems to have good dispersion too (Custom Guitar Speaker Cabinets, Bass Speaker Cabs, MILLS Acoustics).
- Open back cabs disperse the highs well too, but I don't like the inconsistency of bass response depending on your environment.
