Which speaker for dsl 401

Ok, I guess I am going to HAVE to change the speaker in the dsl 401 if I am going to be able to use it at band practice. I did a lot of tweaking and all with it and had it sounding pretty good at home, but I was playing it through a 1960 cab. I took it to practice today and played through it and it sounded like crap. It was OK by itself, but would not cut through the mix. I tried to eq it, but it ended up sounding like it had an aluminum foil speaker. I have never heard any marshall amp sound so sh...crappy my whole life. It was embarrassing it sounded so bad. The other guitar player had a legend 50 combo that sounded like a 1959 sl compared to my amp!
So, what speaker do I need? Somebody help me. The Class 5 just blows this amp away and it should not. We are talking paper thin sound. The only time this amp even sounds close to decent with a band is when I play on the clean channel cranked, and even then it still was kinda thin.

Marty...speaker-man!

I mostly play classic rock. Heavy on 70/80's.

Greenback or Vintage 30. A lot of guys like the Vintage 30 in that amp. I'm not experienced with pther brands, I've always used Celestions. Some one else will chime in I'm sure.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

The main things to be concerned about with a 1 X 12 combo is efficiency and tone. You want to get the most volume out of the 401 that you can.

In the Eminence Patriot Series, I would say try the Black Powder or the Red, White and Blues.

In the Eminence Red Coat Series, I would recommend the Man 'O War, the Governor or the Tonespotter.

You see, some speakers sound great when you play them in your room. However, in a band mix, that same speaker can suck air. You need a speaker that kicks out some good mids to cut through the mix.

Please note-Not all of the speakers I listed are available as 16 ohm. If I had to pick one for your style, it would be the Man 'O War, 16 ohm.

Can't use a Greenback, unless it's the 65w version or whatever it is. Greenbacks are only 25w and you'd end up blowing it. I still tout the extension cab.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

It sounds pretty good through my 1960a or my 1960ax, but if I have to lug a cab along then it kind of defeats the purpose of why I wanted to use a combo.

I have been using the Class 5, but thought I'd try the dsl tonight because I thought I could switch between different gain settings easier with no extra pedals and I could get a little cleaner sound I though. I was most shocked when I stepped out directly in front of it, about 12 feet away and got hit with the "beam!" I just wanted to crawl into a hole it sounded so bad. I guess I could just get the coffee can lid back out and tape it on the front as a diffuser again. That gold back speaker just sounds like crap...like th econes are aluminum foil or something. Crap, I could put a piece of paper against my comb and blow through it for a better tone. I am just disgusted with it.

Yeah, I didn't like the original speaker either. I'd go with Marty's rec's, since he knows his stuff.

A couple of years back I took the dsl 401 to like 1 or 2 band practices, then just started playing my 2205 half stack because it sounded so thin back then. I thought I had it tweaked...

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

Yes, in my case a V30 and a home-made beam blocker behind the grill cloth. And EQ in the loop for more bass on OD, unless i have my 1x12 cab under it.

If you want a simple $5 project, ask me about my bass boosting patch cable designed for this amp - to do that EQ job .

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

I have the fx loop jumped with a patch cable to get more oomph out of it.
If I go to the trouble to change speakers, I would hope I would not still need a beam blocker/diffuser.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

WGS greet beret OR blackhawks. alnico speakers are awesome man. I think it's blackhawk...anyway they have some lower wattage alnicos. if you're playing anything but, modern metal (and i'd still use 'em for it but, i like modern meets vintage) they have some great options. at 20-40 watts clean i'd say double it so you can still get some vintage speaker breakup without killing it.

imo a green beret and aan alnico 2x12 would be amazing for that amp but, i know you're looking for a swap not an extension setup.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

The Eminence Governor = Celestion V30
The Eminence Man 'O War = Celestion G12T-75
The Eminence Tonespotter = Celestion G12-65

Please note that the Eminence speakers have their own tone. I really don't think they sound that close except for the Tonespotter. The Man 'O War has some super chunky midrange and it is very loud. It would be like using a lower efficiency speaker and a DSL50. Yes, you can get the 401 to be as loud as a DSL50 with the right speaker. The MOW is rated at 102dB with one watt. To me, it sounds much better than a Celestion G12T-75. I run a pair in my TSL122 and it is as loud as most 412 cabs.

The other thing is the speakers I picked will work with an open back cab. Some speakers can only be used in a sealed cab. You need to consider that.

The VET 30 has a "cleaned up" midrange and is not spikey like the Celestion V30. So it is a smoother sounding speaker. The MOW is more aggressive sounding. Very articulate and is 4dB louder than the VET 30. That is a big difference with a 40 watt amp.

Marty how close should a speaker be, to the output wattage of the amplifier? In this case I am also using a DSL 401.

I found my answer in search. I believe that I will go for the Red fang. I hope that Sccloser gets his deal straightened out. I like the Red Fang due to the alnico magnet but it triples the price.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

I have a dsl201 that sounds great with a 30 watt 70th anniv g12H. Of course yours being 40 watts needs a higher rating. I also have a 212 loaded with 60 watt neo magnet celestion century vintage speakers that sounds killer. They have a nice warm sound. Give those a try, they weigh like 2 pounds-which is a treat! Some guys won't go near 'em because they don't have your traditional ceramic magnet. I like speakers that don't kill you with high end. I do not like the std 75 watt celestions at all-no mids whatsoever and too much treble. Check out a cd called cone tones. It's great. It has demos of all kinds of 12 in speakers to hear. It helped me make a few purchases I ended up being happy with, like the century vintage.

I'm running the Red Fang in mine and have for about two years. I actually got mine before Eminence bumped the price up. All ALNICO speakers are pricey.

I say V30 too! I just threw one in my 1x12 Haze combo and it sounds pretty much awesome. I have an extra one, new in box that I'd sell you if you're interested. Shipping shouldn't be much from FL to SC.

Re: Which speaker for dsl 401

For others that run across this thread who are looking for a good replacement spearker for the DSL401.

Just installed a Weber silver bell, ceramic, 75 watt, medium dope, in my DSL401. It is now much closer to the amp I thought it could be. All channels sound better: everything is thicker, no more fizz or tin sound, and the amp still retains great sustain and crunch and is much closer to what I expected for a true marshall sound.

Yeah that Weber stuff is tops. I just did a piece on them over in my "Everything About Speakers" thread.
