Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
I have a JCM 2000 DSL 100 on rent and, now, I feel like my "rock n roll" life has never been fully realized until now!...Anyways I digress...
...I put this thing through my Palmer speaker simulator which patches in my lexicon lxp5 and this really was pretty cool for a direct recording...But I was curious how it would sound through the Greenback I have in my Peavy Bravo...Of course, I was very careful with master output because that single Celestion could really burn out hard if I wasn't careful... ...but whoa!!! I pushed that speaker to the limit and that was like heaven!! Oh baby...so how would a V30 play with the Greenback in a 2x12?? This mixing speaker types in cabinets is really big with th boutique amp builders... So the V30 is 60W and the Greenback is 20W...so if wired them in series, I should be OK?? How would it sound?? I'm also considering getting a THD hotplate if I buy this head as I mainly record and don't really play live much anymore... |

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
yeah...this wouldn't make sense...
If you can believe it, I have a JBL kicking around that weigh's a ton, and I pumped the DSL 100 through it -- and it really kicks...different kind of distortion -- very clean in the low-mids...I know using a JBL with a Marshall is blasphemy..but it does growl pretty cool

There's also the G12H, rated at 100db, which I believe would be a better match with the V30. |

yeah, you arr right about the 2db diff...weather or not that's alot is questionable at best. But 2db is 2db. [Is amp depending, too.] but seeing as these are both mid oriented speakers, the v30 will dominate in most situations, becuase the two will not be seam-less, like the g12h recommendation u suggest, which is a very good pairing..

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
I'm not really sure that V30 could be louder tha G12M.
You say right about dB's differences between these two speakers but I think G12M has many more mid freqs than V30 and for that the first one cut better through the mix. V30, to me, has not definition on upper mid freqs like people says and for that, maybe, it's less louder than G12M or G12H. |

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
From my experience, running a Vintage 30 with a Greenback, the V30 will dominate and pretty much drown out any of the greenback characteristics. No doubt more speakers will sound better but still.

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
as far as I know that's a very common comination with boutique-amps.

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
That's interesting...A common pairing for lesser-gained boutique amps is a Celestion Blue and 12H...I ordered a Hellatone 12H to go with the Blue that I have for my Bravo which, after I found a bad pre-amp tube, can go toe-to-toe with 65 Amp or the Orange Rocker 30...I'll have the Greenback leftover so I'll need to pair that up with something...can't hurt to give it a shot with a V30....I guess I can first try it out with the 12H first....

Coolio..thanx JSP...For me, the Greenback needs to be at least "part" of the sound when it comes to getting high-gain classic rock stuff that I like.. I returned the DSL100 holding out for a DSL50 or VM50 head...when the time comes, I'll scoop a V30 and I think the V30/25M combo will be right up my alley...as well as be a perfect match power-wise... |

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
Well...I've been experimenting like crazy...my amp is a Peavy Bravo, and it does have gnarly overdrive..very marshall-like...anyways...Put the green with a hellatone 12h and man, that really has a big sound...I recorded some samples and the blend between the two seems to lock in amazing...the 12H is a tad more mid-scooped whereas the green is all lower mid breakup and what a nice combination...
on another note...i put my celestion blue with the greenback, and for clean/natural overdrive...oh baby...To my ears, the greenie is just the perfect compliment in both cases...it seems to fit the "frequency" limitations of the other speakers, but not in an overbearing way....I can see why the greenback is being used as a good compliment speaker |

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
So I went to L&M and picked up a V30 and put it in a closed box with the 12H...even though the V30 needs to be broken in more, I can see how this combo really shines...It just downright snarls...Was going to try the Greenie with the V30, but I'm just too tired swappin out speakers and soldering
The Greenie probably would sound nicer with the V30, but for now it will have to live with the Blue...at least until I can find a good deal on a DSL50 or VM50

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
Well I may have to eat my own words. I blew a greenback and a friend of mine is going to send me some speakers. He has some prototype V30's that were made for the JSX. I think he is going to send me those, so I may have a G12M/V30 X patterned cab soon.

As soon as I get them! He was going to send me the Governors, then he tried out the prototypes with the greenies and he said it was killer! Hopefully I will get them at some point. Maybe he will slow down enough to actually send them.

Re: Greenback and V30 mix in 2x12??
Hey there,
Great thread - good to see other people experimenting with 212 combinations. I just bought an Orange AD30TC 212 - the two Vintage 30s it comes with were plenty loud, but had (in my view) a harsh 'summing' of the upper mids that sounded a little too punk/aggro for me. I had a RI greenback fitted as a replacement speaker in this old Reverberocket combo which I hardly ever use anymore - so I swapped it with one of the V30's in my AD30. Comparing 2 x V30 with 1 x greenback & 1 x V30: 1) I didn't hear that 'harsh' top end anymore - it's still got bite, but it doesn't slice your ears up with it. In fact, the hi-end in general is much more complex - not louder, but 'wider' sounding. 2) wonderfully complex attack/compression - at around '7' on the Master Vol, the greenback starts doing it's thing, squashing up in the lower mids and adding a sexy, audible soft clip to the power amp drive - while the V30 still has plenty of headroom left, so it's capturing more attack, playing dynamics & hi end. The extra compression at lower volumes makes it easier to coax musical feedback into sustained notes or chords, with less 'shriek' and more 'sing'. 3) The amp's clean sound is much much warmer - the two V30s had heaps of dynamics/sensitivity, but they tended to emphasise the attack of the pick with that 'harshness' I didn't like - now the cleans have an audible 'bloom' in the lower mids, gooeyer and more 'fluid' than 2 V30s were. 4) The bass EQ interacts with the master volume & overall sound a lot more, being the main ways to add/subtract compression from the greenback. 5) The things weighs a little less than it used to... which is a very good thing. 6) It's not as loud as having two 100db speakers would be - but I don't mind trading 2dbs for some extra mojo. In response to the comments about the V30 'drowning out' the G12 - nope. Their response characteristics are quite different, and there is no 'battle' between the two speakers: they work together as a system, i.e. where one stops, the other starts, and vice versa. Basically, if you really want to 'hear' a greenback sound over the V30 sound, I'd reccommend 2 x greenbacks ;-) Cheers ;-) |
