JCM 800 cab - Bad Rattling
Recently aquired a JCM 800 lead 1960 slant cab second hand. Tried it out to try to hear if any of the speakes were blown and it passed my cursory test (played it as loud as I could stand). My amp setup is not typical - I'm using a 1959 super lead 100 (original, not re-issue_) with jmp-1 preamp direct into the inputs. I know it's not really how you are supposed to do it but I'm managing to get a great sound regardless. After cranking it at home I am hearing a major rattling in the cab on some low notes (Les Paul neck pickup).
Opened it up and suprise! Two GT75 celestions and two celestion GT 65's. Never knew 65's existed. Anyone know anything about these suckers? From what I can tell they sound pretty much the same as the 75's but the rattling is coming from one of the 75's! I am not very electronically/technically inclined so I'm not sure what the problem is. Anyone ever have a similar issue? |

Re: JCM 800 cab - Bad Rattling
check the suspect speaker with a ohm meter , then compare it to a known good one of the same type , if the readings are different , you have a problem with the first speaker ,suspect a burnt voice coil etc. also ,remove the speaker from the cab , inspect the out side edge for any rips , or seperations etc . if that checks out good ,then press down on the cone lightly!! if you feel a rough spot or hear scratching type sounds during the excursion of the cone , also signs of a burnt voice coil , if any or all of these symtoms are present , its time for a new speaker. i hope this helps, rattles
in a speaker cab will drive a guy to drink....!!!!!! |
