does old wood affects the tone of a cab??

So my question is does it justifies to buy a vintage 20-30 somethin year old cab, just because of its age?? i mean does the old wood will affect the tone, or a new cab with the same speakers will make no difference??
sorry guys i have been postin a lot of questions around the same subject, but im totally in love with my jmp head and i love to brag about it ...

Re: does old wood affects the tone of a cab??

the biggest thing w/ cabs are how they are constructed and the materials used.....quality is the key here. a good 13 to 18 ply birch cab that is tightly jointed in the corners is the best. and as coldsteal said some older cabs can be rattly.
the justification comes from the fact that these vintage cabs have vintage components and speakers and just have that history and vibe...and arent available any more!

A lot of new cabs use MDF, so you have to keep that in mind. So you want a good midrange cab actually. Not too old due to rattling, and not too new due to inferior materials. Stryker is correct on the birch. You really want a birch cab to sound the best.

Re: does old wood affects the tone of a cab??

I know most 1960A cabs are made of birch plywood
dont know if they are now or not, but mine is
and are very affordable if you get them used.

OK i just read that the new ones are still made with
15mm Birch Plywood but the new ones have
Fiberboard Backs.
My Cab is from 99 so i dont know when they started that

This is from the website
"Ready For Your Gig - Wherever That Might Be!
Roadworthiness is a vital prerequisite in the world of relentless touring and as Marshall's 40 years of cabinet building attests, Marshall cabinets are definitely built to stand the test of time! Their highly skilled craftsmen construct these 4x12s from the finest materials available - 15mm birch plywood with precision 'finger locked' (comb) joints, tough cotton backed PVC covering, heavy duty hardware and the highest quality fittings.

Weighing in at around 80 lbs, the JCM1960A is made of 15mm birch plywood (except for the back panel, which is medium density fiberboard) and built for tone, projection, and durability. The majority of cabinet construction is done by hand."

Cool, thanks for the info, i think as for now im gonna wait i still have my 4x10 marshal wich sound great, but i really want the vintage look and sound of the 1960ax, someone was selling a jcm800 cab with 80watts celestion at $220 wich i think is a great price but its painted all white, also a beat up 1960a at 350. but for now im gonna check on craiglist every now and then.

Re: does old wood affects the tone of a cab??

The old tolex is kind of a two tone like the VM cabs
a gray/black that looks dark blue some times

If i ever decide to get another cab ill get an AX or
what i reaaaalllllly want, the 1960 AHW.
They are alot like the AX but the grill and nameplate is
older style, and the speakers are Heritiage G12H's and $100 more.
There is a scratch n dent one for sale at MF right now
for $969, which i had the change to pick it up.
