I (maybe foolishly) purchased this Marshall 2x12 over the weekend. It was advertised as an empty 1936 cabinet. I didn't spend a lot of money on it but I don't know if I got what I was lead to believe I was getting. As you can see it's a 2x12, made of birch ply. MDF back. The speakers are centered rather than placed at the bottom. The baffle board is not angled. No skid plates on top. Small handles at the side.
Now for the bad news. The baffle board is coming apart. The threaded inserts to mount the speakers are stripped and spinning in their holes. Obviously someone caulked around the inside, maybe to stop it from rattling. It appears it's been painted with black spray paint. (Please don't ask what kind of day I had when I made the decision to buy this cabinet!) ![]() Serial number: A13096 So....what do I have here? What year? Should I dump it and cut my losses or restore it? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: OK, what did I buy?
Well, it looks like a Marshall cab. There are several different styles of T-Nuts available. I'm sure you can find a size that will bite into the stripped out holes. You may have to change to a different size mounting bolt, but that's better than having a loose speaker. If you redid the grille cloth it wouldn't look too bad.

Re: OK, what did I buy?
You found a gem!
I have two early 80's 1936 cabs, and this looks legit, but has different handles, and no slanted baffle. I am positive it is a Marshall, though. Probably late 70's, because of the input jack/serial plate style, elephant grain tolex, etc. My guess would be 1977-80. The gem part is that you have an all birch ply cabinet....and they sound MUCH better than the current MDF cabs built since 1990....and they are lighter in weight, too. I would keep it, and put your favorite speakers in it. Mine have origonal G12 65's, used only for rehearsal...I actually like G12H anniversaries or Marshall Vintage speakers more. I am not sure about the straight baffle thing, perhaps it was a bass cab...but it looks legit... and it's made of real plywood! Have fun, Pete |

Re: OK, what did I buy?
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to stick a Vintage 30 and a G12T-75 in it and see what happens! Or I might stick a pair of G12-80s in there instead, don't know yet. I've got a lot of raw speakers on the shelf! That's why I bought this to begin with!
