Sour Mash Cabinets
Does anyone have any experience with these? They are out of Florida. I see that they build unloaded cab. Use birch construction. I was thinking about getting one and playing with different speaker combinations. The unloaded cabs are pretty inexpensive.
Any advice? |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
Hi
read your post and had to join to reply. I have no association with Sourmash, other than I am a customer of his. Currently own 1x12 Bluesbreaker style ext cab, a 2x12 2061 style 2x12 slant cab, and a 2x12 1936 style cab, have also purchased grillcloth and piping from them. Very happy with build, cosmetically and soundwise, don't know about the cork sniffing crowd maybe there's something I'm missing but they sure do sound good to me. Play them through a 2061 head, and 1959 100 watt reissue and they really deliver. Easy guy to do business with, very fair pricing and it sounds GREAT. Sorry about the length, if I can be of any more help I will answer any question re: my purchases. PS not affiliated lol Steve |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I have a 4x12 with the WGS ET-65s in them and will soon be ordering my second cab with WGS Veteran 30s in them. He has a deal going on between him and WGS (Warehouse Guitar Speakers) where he can load those into your cab for an amazingly low price also. The best part is that they sound every bit as good as celestions.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
Hey Steve and Landshark....thanks for the reply. I didn't know about the speaker options. I will check into that. Sounds like everyone is pretty happy with their purchase.
I am looking for a 4x12. Can you comment about the tone of the cabinet? Thats a tough question I know but I have heard Mesa with vin30s and Marshall with vin30s and thought the Mesa had more low end, kind of boomy. I don't particurely like the vin30 tone, they just happen to be an example of 2 mfg with the same speaker, but different tone. Do you have any opinions on how the cab sounds without talking too much on the speakers? Thanks for the reply guys. |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
Hey Paul
I wouldn't call the tone transparent, but the slight coloring it adds is pleasing (at least to me). The fix for the V30's is to mix them with another model speaker that dosen't cover the same sonic emphasis as the V30. The cab's tone is not bass or treble heavy, I would say more of a vintage rock sound to early NWOBHM-definately not the "Mesa" sound. Steve |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I will say I concur with Steve about the cab's tone. He doesn't use the same kind of birch that marshall or mesa uses, but it sounds really good paired with a marshall. It does have a vintage feel to it. And yes I'm very happy. He's very easy to work with when it comes to specs on the cab.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
Hey Landshark and Steve, Thanks for all the info. I am really considering trying one now. I am up in Central PA so test driving one is out of the question.
Steve mentioned that the tone isn't bass heavy like the Mesa. That is good to hear...I am not looking for that tone. I run a 1987xl into a 1960a cab. I really like my tone, but i would like to get a more classic rock tone, a little less "scooped" from the 1960 cab. It's really a nitpick but what the heck. There are worse things that i could be obsessed with other than my guitar tone I just couldn't justify getting a Marshall cab for $1000 when i know i won't sound $1000 better

Just out of curiosity, are you wanting the slant cab or the straight? I have the slant but am planning on getting the straight cab within a month or so. I use the WGS ET65s and the clarity for my crunch channel on my TSL is to die for. I don't use much gain at all on the channel, usually around 4 or 11 o'clock. With your plexi I'd probably go with he straight cab... But that's just me.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
Ya
straight cab with the 1987, the stuff of legends. I think Shark is right, the cabs seemed almost "tuned", if thats possible, for the Marshall. The NMV Marshall and a 4x12 are a great match, all you need to rock, the only thing missing in my case would be talent lol. I'm buying Sourmash by sound not price if that helps-it's just a bonus he's so fair Steve |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I just stumbled on to some Sourmash cabs on ebay this morning. They still make the 8x10's in the classic Marshall style. To me, that's awesome and it's too bad I don't have any extra cash at the moment.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I know what you mean Viking
I didn't even know I wanted half this stuff until I saw his Ebay site, gas man. Paul just email Bob at Sourmash and he will load it with any of the WGS products, and at a fantastic price. Steve |

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I decided to go with the straight cab 4x12, black tolex, gold small piping, white large piping, and cane grill cloth. This will match my slant cab perfectly. When I get this cab I plan on taking two of the veteran 30s out and x-ing them with the 65x and taking two 65s and x-ing them in the straight cab.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
OK so I went with the same cab type but I decided to stick with the ET-65 speakers from WGS. They just ssound so good with my heads... I really don't think that the veterans could make me happier just from hearing them and hearing vintage 30s. I love the sweet 80s sounds I get with my crunch channel on the TSL and the Vox that I have sounds equally amazing with these speakers.

I absolutely LOVE these cabs! I ordered a 2x12 Marshal style 1936 sealed cab and it totally rocks! I orderd mine with no speakers and loaded it with V30's, I got it white tolex with a black face. Basically, it was the Randy Rhoads sig model color scheme. Sounds tight and solid construction, not to mention Bob is so cool to deal with and his prices are very reasonable! I had a marshall logo lying around so I put it on, check it!!

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I had one, it was a good cab. My problem with Sourmash is the buy there is a dick.
He screwed my up order, then took forever to correct it, and was an ass about it the whole time.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
It was a long while ago when I last commented this thread, but I never got that second cab. He quoted me one price and then when he gave me the total it was ay different. I've since gotten rid of that cab and have been through a Laney slant cab and now have a Marshall 1960B cab. The only thing that stuck around was those WGS speakers... Those ET-65s are hot! Especially in the 1960B!

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I have a 2x12 that Bob built for me, loaded and wired. Just the best cab for the money. Customer service was fantastic as well, you can't go wrong.

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I know this is a very old thread but want to say again that my experience with Bob has been excellent. Great quality and very reasonable prices. I've ordered several head cabs and two speaker cabs, all excellent. One of the speaker cabs was a custom ported 1x12 for my old JBL K120 that turned out great (on left under Showman below). His reasonable prices to load his cab with WGS speakers is what turned me on to how great WGS stuff is. Every cab in this photo (except the Showman head) is Sourmash. The 18W TMB (in Sourmash head cab) and WGS loaded 2x12 has been my main gig rig for over a year now:

Re: Sour Mash Cabinets
I will echo everyone else's thoughts. I've bought two cabs from him. Both are well built, the wood work is flawless, the tolex seams are perfect, grillcloth is straight, sound is excellent. He's pretty quick. My first cab took about 6 weeks. The second was about 2 or 3 weeks. They're inexpensive and he'll do custom work if you request it. They're about as well packed as anything that's ever been shipped by mail. For the price, quality and features, I can't see ever buying a Marshall cab (gasp!) over a Sourmash. Seriously.
