Evm 12l?

Howdy

Quick question, i'm a little disappointed with the stock speaker in my AVT100X and am thinking about swapping it out with a EVM 12L. I play fenders and the speaker in just too low end. I've tried removing the back panel and it didn't help. Has anyone tried the EV in any of their AVT models?

I think what jcmjmp meant was that with a solid-state output section, you may not be getting close to what you perceive as real Marshall sound. So changing speakers may not get you closer to the sound you hear in your head, and is just more money spent that could've gone to another amp that would satisfy the tone you hear inside your head.

When you say the speaker is too 'low-end', do you mean too bassy-sounding or too 'cheap-sounding'?

I don't have an AVT, but I like the EV12L; mine is pretty damned old, though, it's not one of the reissues, so i cannot comment on tonal characteristics of the newer ones.
It's a fairly 'flat'-sounding speaker. Well, if you look at freq-response graphs, it sure ain't flat... But to my ears, it doesn't really accentuate the ass, throat or chime of the amp (or bass, mids, highs, if you prefer) as much as some other speakers do. The mids don't seem as pronounced, nor are they 'scooped.' Some people don't like 'em though; my friend says they sound too much like they're trying to be stereo speakers, not guitar speakers - but he loves his Vintage 30's. Maybe it's the lack of breakup - you have to REALLY drive the EV's before they start to distort.

Maybe checking out frequency-response graphs of different speakers will give you a better idea of what speakers you should be checking out.

Good luck!

Thanks, my EV is also an older speaker out of a Fender Princeton Reverb i've had for years. I play Tele's and Strats and the stock speaker in the AVT is on the bassy side. I did throw the EV in the cab and it made a world of difference. It really brought out the mids and brightness of my single coils. Exactly what i was hoping for. Although i hav'nt been able to really put it through the paces, i'm sure it will be better than what i had. All i have to do now is keep from getting a hernia lugging it around. I appreciate your help and your useful response.
