You've lost that lovin' feeling
Hey, recently I seem to have lost all motivation to play, either with my band or just for the hell of it, I have missed gigs and rehearsals through just not wanting to play anymore, does anyone else feel the same way? or felt this way? how did you get past it and re-discover the 'lovin feeling?' even my recent purchase of an original '81 JCM 800 4010 combo has not enticed me into playing more, I used to practice about 6+ hours a day back when i was 15-19, now I have just turned 30 and it just feels dead.
I guess it started about 2 years ago, my band at the time was making somethig of it, record company interest (no really!) and a supporting gig with Bowling For Soup (yeah we played fun punk-pop) but then our drummer moved away, and we hired a new drummer, who was already playing with the other 4 guys as a covers band, and we seemed to just work on getting me into the covers and let the original side fall to the wayside, now 2 years later no-one wants to play the original stuff anymore and i really don't know why??? now we just play the usual pub-rock covers set down the 'Dog & Duck' archetypal pub, ok it maynever have worked out as it so often does but, at least we would have given it a shot? OR am i just bitching about nothing?

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
Sounds to me like your a bit burnt out at the moment. Happens to everyone. You need to get away from it for awhile and pursue other interests. Soon you'll probably be back at it full force! I was away from music for years... there was a time when I put down my guitar and thought I'd never pick it up again.
I recenly read that Les Paul did the same thing. For like most of the 60's he never played a note. Then he came back with a vengence. A break might do ya wonders!

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
sounds like you need to find some new dudes.
if i had to play covers every day i'd ask one of you to just take me out behind the barn and put me down.

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
Thanks chaps, I decided to leave my band last night at rehearsal, they were all cool with it, and now I can concentrate on getting my mojo back
![]() Just need to chill out for a bit and decide what type of venture is next.

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
I play 3 times a week and occassionally feel this way. Sometimes the money motivates me (average about £200 a week from gigs) sometimes getting blind drunk and thinking Im Jimi or Jimmy does it. We are there to entertain but god its fun to play for yourself.
I was in a signed band and did very well out of it, now its covers with a day job but its all rock n roll. The joy I see on punters faces when I play a kings of leon, U2 or Men at work song motivates me enough. I gig crappy pubs with about £5k worth of stuff, JUST FOR ME. The audience doesnt care that I have old guitars and amps but I do, and making noise makes my life better. I could sit in the house watching X factor of a weekend... |

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
You have to do what makes you happy! Sounds like it was time for a new band. Right now I am pretty much in the same spot. Making money is good but not always been the main motivation for anything I have done musically.
I have alway pretty much been a rock & roller but the alternative/country material I have written and recorded has gone alot farther than anything I have done in my past R&R lifetime. Making music makes me happy. Writing and composing it I guess makes me happiest. When I have to catagorize my current genre as a artist....thats where I get into trouble.

Re: You've lost that lovin' feeling
I think everyone hits a dry spot, sort of similar to 'writer's block', only for a musician. One thing I never did was intend to play for money, and I never will. Think of the things in life which motivate you most: Which would you do for free, without batting an eye?
![]() As far as burnt out, remember: Lennon set his guitar down for years until he was ready to pick it up again. |
