Watch What You Are Buying

About a month ago I wrote in and asked about the original speakers in a JCM 2000. I wanted to know what they were supposed to be as I was "thinking" about buying one. (My wife has put all of my toy buying on hold for now). Any way, I was on ebay and sent a message to the folks at Motor City Pawn and asked them "Can you tell me what brand and model of speaker is inside the amp?". Their response...get this..."How do I check? Thank you".

Re: Watch What You Are Buying

Thats nothing.

I was putting an FRFR rig together and was looking for a couple of good 1x12 cabs for the rig when I ran across a Rocktron S112 1x12 on my local Craigslist for a decent price. I googled it all before I contacted the dude to make sure it was what I wanted. The deal maker for me was that it supposedly had an 8ohm 75watt speaker in it according to Rocktrons website and the Musicians Friend ad. I use 1960s in my other rigs so I thought that would be perfect as I'm used to G12T-75s. The stereo power amp I was going to use was a 50/50 thats why I wanted a 75 or at the least a 65watt speaker. So I bought the used cab, checked it all out when I got it home and it had the right speaker in it,worked, sounded awesome. I liked it so much I decided to order a new one from Musicians Friend. Ordered it. Waited. Got it in. Hooked it all up. Since it was new I know to give the speaker some break in time.

But it sounded terrible. Took the grill off, unscrewed the speakers,BAM,they had put an 8ohm 100watt speaker in the cab. Got ahold of MF CS and was told what I already knew that I could send the cab back within my returns time period. I didnt want to do that,I just wanted a new speaker. They told me then to call Rocktron and have Rocktrons CS check with them about my warranty and see if they could swap me speakers and I would be paying the shipping. No problem. Rocktrons CS hands me off to a technician. Guess what he tells me? "O,we're putting 100 watt speakers in those cabs now,we dont even have any more 75 watters". WTF!! All their ads advertise the cabs as 75 watt cabs. What am I supposed to do now I tell the guy. I have one channel of a stereo power amp with 50watts pushing a 100watt speaker and the other channel w/50watts pushing a 75watt speaker. Then I got a sorry we cant help you.

So,I talk to MF CS and whoever else would speak to me and then after a bunch of transfers and getting to talk to a bunch of various people, they decided to give me a break and swap the speaker for a speaker of my choice. Ya,they looked at my account and saw how much money me as well as my band have spent with them. Problem solved but Rocktrons Customer Service is fucked and Ive used many of their products faithfully for years and years. I still will but theyre still a bunch of arses. Cant wait to run into them at NAMM and cause a drunken stink.

Re: Watch What You Are Buying

nofearfactor, sorry you had to go through all that. I didn't buy that amp I was referring to. I figure if they don't know that, then they really don't know doodley squat...and I really shouldn't waste my money.

It sucks when you know more about a sellers product than they do.

Re: Watch What You Are Buying

Hear ya there. One day I heard one of the local guitar shop hands telling a guy why they didn't carry Gibsons(although they had Epiphones): "They're too heavy." Whaaa? Oh, that must be the reason they won't sell. His boss was just too cheap to get any. And forget about tone; just buy that Samick on the wall there.
