"Marshall Ear"?

So, who amongst you have been partially deafened by your Marshall? I'm 26 and I think my right ear is starting to show some wear...time to get "real" earplugs I guess.

Over the last few years I've delveloped an odd "clicking" or "tapping" sound...that's bad right?

Anyways, sound off on your ringing, tinnitus, and other ear-related ailments. Any advice/miracle cures are always welcomed!

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

Clicking or tapping is definitely not good, nor is it tinnitus. Hopefully it's just some fluid or wax buildup creating pressure changes that you hear as pops and not a torn eardrum. Go see an audiologist. hearing is not something to gamble with.

While your at the audiologist, have him/her make you some custom molded earplugs. They can be made to accept various inserts for different sound level reductions and can work flat across the spectrum. Often these are partially covered by insurance as "preventive medicine."

That being said, I've got a little tinnitus from loud shows back in the day. I kick myself in the ass for not using earplugs sooner in life.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

well im going to have ear problems thats for sure. my grandmother, who passed recently was almost deaf at the time she passed. but she was 101. my dad however has had hearing problems for over a decade and never went to concerts just played his piano. in my family its hereditary. i can hear a pin drop accross the room, but i cant mke out what people are saying. ill hear it, wont understand it. i wear earplugs that claim let u hear the music better then normal ones and block the harmful sound vibrtions from the ear drum. i thinkt there music safe pro earplugs, theyre foreign.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

I've lost certain high frequencies...that happen to be the same as cymbals...
Too many gigs on small stages in the old days with a cymbal an inch away from my ear. I never played my guitar at ear splitting volumes pointed at my head. On the times when it was really cranked, it was either baffled or pointed elsewhere and ran through the monitors. But I still did too much with no ear protection. Every once in a while we would just grab some toilet paper and stuff it in. The music safe pro earplugs sound interesting.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

yeah, try them, i hope they work, they give you these filters to put in it, i dont know how well it protects your eardrums, but it blocks the volume .it blocks the high pitched frequencys or so it says

I don't know if it's a torn eardrum, but I can't remember when it wasn't there at this point...now my left ear is starting to get it too. Mostly it's when I swallow saliva (interestingly, not when I drink a beverage). Maybe it's earwax, but it'd have to be pretty imacted up there. One time I read that some people who have TMJ have their ear canals mush together (Like squeezing a straw with your thumb and finger) and when the canal opens up (release the straw) again the 'unsticking' of the two sides of the canal makes the clicking sound...I dunno though. Anyone else experience this? Bueller?

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

Maybe your need your ears professionally cleaned or something? Hell, you might have awesome hearing in comparison after a cleaning. Couldn't hurt to have pro take a look. I still say see an audiologist.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

I've got hearing issues too. I had loud car stereos in the past, and went to alot of loud concerts and clubs. Plus rehearsing with the band in a small studio didn't help.

Same with me. Small stage, big kit and you have a crash cymbal resting on your right ear. I always played in a two guitar band and I was always on stage left, so my right ear is worse than my left. I was also around the flight line in the Air Force for six years. That didn't help. I went to an audiologist in 1991 and he said I had a lot of loss between 2 and 4K. Hey, what do you know? Just like cymbals.

My rehearsal studio was nice, but had low ceilings. I spent nine years in that condition. I don't play out that much anymore and I am older than most and I started taking care of my ears back in 1991. It's paid off. I mean I have hearing problems, but I'm not hearing any ringing or popping.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

wow carnada good answer never thought of that, tell me what are these earplugs and where do i buy such a thing?

...

in all seriousness wearing earplugs will only help to a certain degree. it can be hereditary in my case. i talked to a guy in a touring band who said he wore earplugs from on the tour bus to on stage and he has hearing problems. sometimes it matters the person, and no matter how much cotton you stuff in your ears, if you have prolonged exposer to high volumes your gona lose your hearing eventually. same thing with everything i guess...

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

I always wear a plug in that ear now...not live though. I'll let y'all know if I ever go to an audiologist or whatever. My Grandmother is pretty much deaf, so it might be a hereditary thing as well...yikes!

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

Did Ted Nugent wear ear plugs?

How about Jimmy Page or Hendrix?

How about all of the pro and semi-pro rock musician's from the late 60's to the end of the 80's. How many of them wore ear protection?

Nowadays, they have the "in the ear" monitors. You don't need a 112dB stage monitor blaring at you from the front and the drums in the back. Everyone uses them and of course I've mentioned before that the stage SPL has gone down dramatically since the mid-90's. Most stage volumes are at around 92-95dB compared to 110dB+ in the 70's and 80's.

Check out your favorite artist live and they are using an "in the ear" monitor.

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

everyone get earplugs at your closest drug store. They are like 4 bucks a pack of 6 earplugs.

Somepeople say, "when I play live, I dont wear earplugs cuz I need to hear everything" well, let me tell you something.........when you wear earplugs you can actually hear more of the band, and not just noise, and distortion. Earplugs have been the greates investment I have made lol.

The drummer of my band said "dude, why do you care so much about your ears, its just sound!"

Re: "Marshall Ear"?

My right ear is all fucked up at the moment, it's uber blocked with wax, and it's been ringing for the last few months, originally I thought it was just my Marshall ear, but it turned out it was just more blocked than my left one. Which in the long run is a good thing, because the wax will have prevented my ear from getting so fucked up.

Woo for Ear wax =D

I have to agree with you there, you get less of the break up covering your hearing, and more of the real notes, also I find it easiest to keep myself on track/on time if I listen to the drums instead of everything else.

my pal had a set of custom made ear plugs that let alot of the natural sound into
the ear but cut the db by like 15% , he said he would never go on a stage with out
them ever again . the greatest thing since pre-lubed condoms !!!! they set him back 200 $ Canadian .
