Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

I will have some big surprises for you guys next week!!! But for now I have decided to use scrap wood from my projects to make some extra cash I am now a pipe maker. My goal is to make affordable classy pipes with an organic style! No rough stuff! Here are some of the pictures!

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

2 types of wood is 20 bucks plus shipping. 3 types of wood (Mahogany, rosewood, ebony) is 30. A simple one like the one on the second picture is 15.

I can also engrave your initials in the back with classy letters. But that's 5 bucks more.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

Nice Carnada, keep up the good work man!

I've owned several wooden pipes. Not a big fan because it burns through the wood. I see you're unsing screens, but I'd prefer to avoid screens also.
Either way, I would definitely buy one from you man! I can't right now, but if I could, I'll send you a PM.
They look nice.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

Maybe you're not using much Ebony, but that wood is spendy as hell here. 30 bucks would barely cover your time. Just say'n you could probably charge more with that kind of wood.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

So I told my mom about my business idea and she says I should charge more! I think I agree. They are not for sale at the moment haha I was just doing them for fun as gifts for friends. But a lot of their friends started liking them too. I honestly don't know how much to charge. Any ideas? Please be honest.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

Cost of upcharged materials + hours of labor x desired hourly wage = price

Whatever the materials cost you, add some money to that, and determine how much you want to make per hour, its got to be reasonable though. I bought a nice tobacco pipe with a detachable mouthpiece made out of some kind of resin or plastic or something, stained figured wood, big bowl, no screen for $90. Smoke tobacco out of it. A really nice wooden pipe could be upward of $150.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

I think I'd be more in the $50-$65 range maybe...
If you want to sell more, maybe even 40? $45?

I'll admit, it is a little cheap at 30, you'll probably sell them pretty quick. I'm told they got good stuff in Canada. Tobacco, of course.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

I was a lead carpenter for a long time. When we did cash jobs we charged $30/hr for framing, $40/hr for trim and cabinets, and $50/hr for stairs and railings. I wouldn't do any custom wood work for less than $50/hr and that is only if it's cash. Of course you may not be able to do that right away, as you are not going to be fast enough at it, but it isn't out of line.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

And that's labor only, not materials. You have to add at least 10% to materials and if you're going to claim it, another 15-30%. Depends on your income.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

You guys are smokin too much of those little pipes if you think they are worth more than 15$ at any given head shop. Go ahead, charge a lot. I'd say at least 150$ a piece.

Damn! I was planning on selling them for like 20 bucks each! I was making almost minimum wage. Yeah, that's it. 35 dollars for the simplest one. 40 for the one with ebony. 50 for the one with 3 woods or so? Is that fair?

Now I hear 150?

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

Carnada, I'll have to inform you will have to test them.

If you're gonna sell them at 20-30, you'll have to put down a cloth on the floor close to a walk ala Venice Beach, California.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

You have to figure out how long it takes to make 20 of one kind + materials, and if you were to set up a booth somewhere. It may not be worth it, but you never know. I sure as **** wouldn't want to put a ton of time and effort into making something and then braking even. I can sit on the couch watching tv and not make anything.

Just something to think about.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

Well, at least you'll be sharpening even more your wood-working skills. Kinda like practicing scales on the guitar. Repeating it over and over gets it cleaner and cleaner. So even if you don't make a dime, you'll have a bunch of gifts for your stoner friends! I'm kidding, tobacco smokers or course.
And you will be even better with your skills, or even learned a NEW skill out of making these.
So you won't really loose anything.

Good job Carnada, keep it up.

Re: Wood-working is taking me somewhere!

i have to agree w/junkie

i wouldnt pay much for one, they look nice and all, but lets be serious...its a wooden pipe, thats it. and it will eventually burn the chamber, rendering it less desireable to smoke out of as you start pulling big hits of rosewood in with your *tobacco*.

not trying to discourage you carnada, charge what the market will bear...but dont go nutty about it would be my advice. keep it simple, keep it cheap.

and dont put any chemical finishes on them!
