Yeah...I got bored so I decided to figure out how Stevie Ray Vaughn gets the sound he does (ain't talking about the amps, strings, pups, etc.). Watched videos, listened to his albums, over and over and over. Played my Strat until my fingers hurt! I know his licks and style, but something was missing. I found it. The grail seems to be that he thoroughly ATTACKS the strings hard as hell! Watching him it looks so smooth, but he really is wailing the hell out of the strings! When I got pissed cause I still didn't get it I just started smacking the strings harder and voila, there it was. Now I'm not afraid to play my guitar hard...I had never thought that he was nailing like that...but when I really bit the string heavy...that sound just poured forth. Yea!

yea, there is but ONE way to get SRV tone out of a guitar,...you have to Beat it out of it.

I noticed that he hit the strings hard some time ago, not that I can play like him anyway. But I too beat the strings pretty bad, and a friend once told me he has huge strings in the bass, so since a few months I use the fattest strings I can find; 60 (or 58 if they don´t carry 60) and upwards. I find 13 too heavy on the E so I use 11.
Those fatties in the lower end lets you hit them hard without the tone wailing out of tune.
But man... Does he play guitar!!! I listen only to him now. Check the second solo after the piano on Riviera Paradise. Jesus!!!!

Well, I am building 4 others. Or I should say re-building. Got a new flying V stripped down and sent out for paint, Got 2 Tele builds going on, and painting a strat in the traditional EVH scheme!
