I thought I had improved my playing, just when...
I plugged it in!
Playing an electric guitar is so deceiving acoustically - Plug it in and it sounds so sloppy I guess it's because all the imperfections are amplified more greatly and you can actually hear them!

Lol, yeah I learned that the hard way some time ago, in fact to add to this, always play plugged in and standing up! From there on in everything else is easier, eg. unplugged and or sitting.

That's weird. I usually sound just as good or even better when I am plugged in.

I think a lot of that depends on the amp and guitar setup. I like to practice on what I call hard player amps, very tight and non forgiving. when I play out I like a nice warm smooth amp that works with me a little.

Re: I thought I had improved my playing, just when...
Man, now that I do the math, other than demoing stuff at a music store, I have not played electric guitar sitting down or unplugged in over 7 years!! Practicing like you're gigging is the way to go. Especially if you're a guitarist and singer. Granted, I don't live in apartment and our band gear has been in my basement for a loooong time. Yes, I have an acoustic I can play unplugged.
I do play bass unplugged sometimes!
