As far as being 'screwed,' I don't think so. Only so much money in an area like mine. Can't expect to make what a doctor or lawyer hauls in in this area. My employer can't afford a lot of stuff like that, and I'm fine with it.....I'm one of very few who've survived the economic implosion and been able to stay at work very near full time. Having to pay out benefits like PV and SL might cost one of us a job. I can live with that.

It's about toughening up in this economy. And then the end will come.

Skoto, and anyone else, you've got to start networking. The only way to get ahead is by knowing someone. It may be by working somewhere for a while and getting in good with a manager, but it's everywhere else too. It's all who you know!

There is a great book out there, pretty old now, called 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' that can really help you change the way you think about jobs and life in general. I would highly recommend checking it out. Not to necessarily get into real estate like he did, but it will help in all aspects of anyone's career. I'm sure doing dishes at Hooter's has it benies but it still has to suck, especially with a dickhead for a boss.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I agree with the Kiyosaki book, except many people don't get it and think it's full of shit. (I was banned from TGP for talking about the book..) so that was just one of the lessons that taught me most people couldn't really give a shit about trying to get ahead, they just wanted to continue on what they were already doing.

I think it's great! And I have most of his books, as well as many others of the same vein. Another one by (I think?) Tim Ferris called the 4 hour work week is interesting, but it didn't work for me. Principles are what I aim for, but his way of getting there isn't for me. The guy has done some really amazing things in his life by bending the 'rules' of modern day society and basically just does what he wants while making a heap of cash. My favourite book is one by Ed Chan called 'how to achieve wealth for life' but it's made for Aussie real estate so don't rush out and buy it if you live overseas.

There are a few types of people when it comes to finance (IMO anyway)

1. The bludger. The bludger couldn't give a shit, period. He doesn't have dreams, or money. But usually has a large DVD collection!

2. The employee. Typically has a strong work ethic and is happy with the stability working provides, working hard for a living and sense of accomplishment are things the employee prides himself on. Usually spends all he earns on just getting by and retires with little unfortunately because the system doesn't work well in terms of effort/reward. The Boss however usually makes money

3. Business owners/self employed. There is money to be made, although many blow everything they earn no matter how much and end up with bugger all. Others will do the opposite and make a fortune for life

4. Investors. Can be business owners or employees. Successful, driven ones will find financial stability that keeps growing stronger over time, ones without the will won't make it that far

Summary: Whatever one you are, your aim should be to have some sort of money to live on if you stop working. If your earnings are more than your expenditure then you're financially free. If that means you have to move to Bali then you're still free.. Many of us could sell all we own and move to one of these countries and live like a King for the rest of our days! Or even just for a few years, it's all possible. But only if you want to

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I used to work 45 hours a week as a truck driver, technically with a 45 minute tachograph break, but would quite often have to work through that break to get everything done. Some days I'd get back to the yard at 7pm (started work at 7am)

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I used to work night shift at the local port 11,5h/night with 1/2h unpaid break, 3 nights in a row then 3 nights off. Over a 2 month period the average per week were something like 42h (some overtime here and there). 4 weeks paid vacation.

Not only how many hours a week, but how many months a year!?!?

I know many europeans (mostly musicians) who only work "seasonal jobs" and spend the rest of the year chilin' on unemployment (and touring with their bands )

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

How about a long day story?

Once upon a time when I was in my early twenties, the company I was working for needed me to be in the East Bay area of California at a decent time to do some work (that's vague enough). I woke and got the company truck at 4 AM. I drove 4 1/2 hours to the job. I worked all day, and then drove all the way home. I parked the company truck at 12:09 AM. 20 hour day. Sickening to think of now, even though I'll pull 12-14 in this day and age. When I have to. I'm far beyond proving I'm a man. Stuff hurts a little more now.

My longest work week ever was 74 hours in a six day period. It works out to a little over 12 hours/day.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

We had a 6 story office building for HSBC to do a few years back, towards the end it was 5 twelve hour days, 10 on saturday and 8 on sunday from the week after thanksgiving until the middle of february

longest day was 23 hours 10 minutes from the time i left the house until I got back home. Regular day followed by a cutover in the same building that started right when the first job ended. Would've been a lot shorter but the project manager thought he could save money by not ordering the right material.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I work 12.5 hour shifts, and I work 50 hours in the space of 4 days. But I then get 4 days off. It averages out at 37.5 hours a week. Just crammed into a smaller space to equal more days off.

I think it's central and eastern Europe who (so I've heard) have lighter work weeks...Like Italy and maybe France, Hungary etc...

Those 24 hours are killer. I've done similar things on volunteer projects, but not for work. I have pulled all-nighters due to the fact that you can't get in the building during business hours to do the job. Also been working a lot in the hospitals. OSH-POD, HIPPA, etc. regulations make work slow to a crawl.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I'm working 40-60 hours a week for $11/hr here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm trying to find a place, but its rough. A one bedroom apartment and all utilities is $1,000/month in this area AT LEAST. Closer to $1,200-$1,300.

I've sent out dozens of emails to people with rooms and called them and texted them, and I'm getting practically no response. Its ****ing ridiculous. Probably because I don't have any credit established.

I've got a friend that lives in the same town that wants to move out of his parent's place, but he isn't in much of a hurry. Besides, I have to commute the opposite way. It wouldn't make any sense to move him to cheaper housing 30 minutes farther away from his work when there is cheaper housing 10-15 minutes from it instead of 45 minutes to an hour commute.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

Last time I was in Europe, at lunch time everyone stopped work and went home for lunch, all the shops shut. Then a few hours later everyone went back to work again and everything opened back up. The reason being was because lunch is the main meal of the day over there. This was a a few years back, in Malta to be precise....don't know if this is still how they do things in Europe though.

Peace

EDIT as someone else suggested man get a roomie or a rich GF Andy =)

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

In the Netherlands a full time workweek is between 32 and 40 hrs.
A nomal working day is 8 hours (excluding lunch time) and the Sunday is free.
A regular workweek is 5 days (mon-fri).
One can have a parttime contract (example:30 hrs in a 40 hr workweek) and work more (like 4 working days = 32 hrs) and build up extra days ("time for time").

Your employer needs to give you 20 paid working days, per year.
This excludes public holidays.
If you have children under 8, your employer must grant you unpaid parental leave when you request it. This up to 26 weeks per child, which can be consumed over the period until your child becomes 8.

Depending on the collective labour agreement (which most employees have) you can have more (un)paid leave. I know people that have 50 days a year (20+30) excluding public holidays and special leave. There can also be special paid leave like for instance when a close family member dies (spouse/child/parent/sister/brother/grandparent) or when your child is born. Depending on your salary scale (and day of week) overtime can be paid or unpaid. When overtime is paid, the percentage is 100% or higher.

Ok, to clarify: You work under contract? Is this in most professions, or just some? Much of the work in the US is 'at-will' employment.

I like the idea for paid leave during a tragedy. That would be nice. There is a program here that allots for up to 6 weeks paid (at a lower, 'unemployment' style rate) when you have to care for an adult member of your household, disability-wise that is, or if you have a new child (born or adopted) to give time to bond with.

Re: Dear Europeans, how many hours do you work in a 7 day week?

I work 96 hours per week but only work 6 months of the year (North Sea oil rigs) and for that I earn £80,000 per annum.

Sounds good but everything over £43,000 is taxed at 40%
