It's give and take. That goes for everyone. We're not all A-holes, and they're not all b*tches. Most people never figure that out, or choose not to do so.

Whether or not YOU have a drinking problem is an answer YOU mus figure out for yourself. There are plenty of indicators, both internally and externally (read= from others) that can help you determine.

I'd say if the majority of people very close to you feel the same way, they may have a point.

I getcha. The roasting is starting to get to me.......especially when I start a thread that had absolutely no controversial content, and someone starts a storm in it.

But back to the original thought (theoretical as it may be), I sincerely believe that most people cannot step outside their own view, even to that of their mate's. I have been guilty of this myself.

same here. me mum is visiting for a week- she has no cable- she loves the same rehashed cop shows they've been doing since the 70's- the 43 versions of csi are just quincy rehashed...

i watch docus on pbs, diners drive in & dives, hawaii 5-o & the typical monday night cbs 2.5 men comedies- it's just a stare @ time waster... nothing educational & if i want drama i just leave the house in the morning.....

but it was a joke & now it was lost in the moment cause espn has replays of another detroit lions win... yeah the bears suck this year but can ya believe deetroit @ 5-0.. even though Romo & my cowboys gave them the last one...

i'd love for the cowboys to see them again in a playoff w/ everyone healthy & Romo's head on straight..
sorry- steak calls..

Re: you have a drinking problem

My drinking is therapeutic. It's the only way I can un-knot at the end of the day. Well, there are other ways, but they are sometimes frowned upon by everybody but NORML. Now a drink AND a toke, not too much of either, and I want to play some guitar (unless I get distracted by hormones).

I don't have a drinking problem. I bought a liter of tequila last week and there's still at least 1/4 of the bottle left. I think I'm showing amazing restraint

Nowadays, my wife never drinks more than a glass of wine or two so she is my designated driver if I decide to have a few. I always figure that if we get pulled over and the cops give her shit, I can always say, "Hey, I could have been the one driving!" It takes more than a couple of glasses of wine to get her snockered.

I have a "**** it" attitude toward drinking now. It's killing me. So what? Breathing is killing me. Smoking is killing me. ****ing living is killing me. If I lose a few months or a year or two because of drinking, but I feel better and live better because of it, I think it's a fair trade.

Oh I know. Frank Zappa once said "to me, a cigarette is food." Pretty ironic for an anti-drug and alcohol guy, but I think in my case it applies to the others as well. If not food, then medicine.

Re: you have a drinking problem

There is a difrence with "Man, I can go for a drink right now", and "Man, I need a drink".

The difference is want and need.

When its 'need', there may be a problem. But I guess it depends on the person.
I have times where I really need a drink. When I realize it gets like a routine, I try to cut back.

Re: you have a drinking problem

A 1.75 liter of my favorite Scots whiskey lasts me for a month, give or take. On weekends away with friends a couple of times a month, I'll pour it down pretty good - but during a normal week a couple of shots at the end of the day (one straight up - one sipped) satisfies. Occasionally I just pass and go to bed.

Drink and play guitar? Hell no - my response time go to shit and my fingers get tangled up in each other, lol.

I quit drinking and driving around 36 years ago (not a drop and get behind the wheel). The only time I drink and try to do anything is when I'm hiking in the woods in the Fall or Winter. I used to drink a whole lot more, but I saw it getting in the way of things I wanted to do - so I cut back until I found a happy balance. Doesn't mean I don't occasionally overdo on some of those party weekends.

Re: you have a drinking problem

How come when you need a drink you have a problem? I need a drink because if I didn't drink, I would need a valium or something else to make me sleep. If I'm running on pure air, my mind always feels a step ahead of me. 2 or 3 drinks and it slows down enough that I can relax. I feel no shame in saying it - I am a diagnosed manic depressive and I drink heavier when I'm manic, which is a good bit of the time, and most of the time when I drink it's only a couple. I don't go over that limit except some nights when I just can't go to sleep and I'm sitting here until 2 a.m. messing around on the forum and keep a glass to sip from beside me.

When I'm down, I don't tend to drink as much. There are meds that control the mania and the depression to a certain extent, but it's a fine line between controlling the problem and being over-medicated. I choose not to be over-medicated because it slows me down too much. So I choose to be a little on the manic side which is a little like having the jitters from too much caffeine. I don't sleep as well, but I have more energy. When I'm in a down phase (like now) I rely more on meds than alcohol. My doctor doesn't have a real problem with it as long as it's moderate. I don't see it as destructive behavior. It works for me. Some people don't see this as a real condition, but there is one important fact that anyone who's dealt with depression knows. Either you control it, or it will control you. Some manic/depressive people get through life by doing things like base jumping, skiing down mountains, diving with sharks... they need the adrenaline rush to help them keep going. I like the alcohol better. And, I refuse to say I'm bi-polar. There's something about that phrase I don't like. Maybe it's the bi part. Or maybe it sounds like I'm a ****ing battery.

Re: you have a drinking problem

Years of abuse has made me pretty against drinking regularly. Special occasions, MAYBE, but alcohol seems to bring out the worst in a lot of people. I'm not saying don't drink, I am saying I don't drink and choose not to for stated reasons

Isn't it strange that the inability to type in coherent sentences disappears whenever someone is starting a thread in the topic line?

Everybody has their crutch in this world. Some are better then others, but not everyone can have some super productive crutch. Some people just have to drink or something.

Life, why can't we just live it and not concern ourselves with other people's activities if they aren't hurting anyone around them?

Thanks man. I know I've been negative lately but these are some of the hardest times of my life. I'm glad somebody cares and understands.

Re: you have a drinking problem

I do care, because I know that even with a loving family and good friends, I often feel alone. I know I'm not, but they can't see and hear what's going on up there. Too much. It's rough on us, but also on them since they are helpless for the most part. I try to be the best I can for my fam and loved ones, and even then I know I fail. And the mind plague (that's what I've always called it) just magnifies all my faults for me to see and critique. I just remain determined not to follow the course of my old man. He sought release and punished his family in the process. I won't do that to my sons. God knows that I've wanted to and felt like it was the only option, but I know that's just the neurons firing when they shouldn't. Life isn't easy, and it's not going to get any easier, but my hope isn't in money or medicine...........or even music. Some of those things get me by, but a huge change is coming. That keeps me going.

Hang on Alan. I do know, at least to an extent, how hard it is.

Thanks. My wife is having some pretty serious health problems right now and I'm hoping it's not mental. She's had a personality change, definitely. She had a bad reaction to some meds, I was encouraged today because she sounded more like her old self than she has in weeks. I'm hangin in...
