Depression is hitting me hardcore...

This is apart from not getting a gf and sucking at life.

Okay, so I have this awesome ****ing gear, but I never get to use it because I am not in a band nor I will be in one any time soon. No one in my area plays my kind of hard rock progressive ballad 80s midi equipment shit, so I dont know what to do. I also dont have transportation to bring all the gear somewhere, and now I dont even have a job to afford a cab (taxi) or something. I have been thinking about selling it all and pursue my career in classical guitar? but that shit is ****ing lame. Or should I sell all the amps and just get a good rock and rolling VOX with a tube screamer? hmm I dont know

Any of you have been in this sort of situation before??

Growing up sure is tough.

My advice, in all seriousness is to find some older dudes in real life to turn to. First hand experience will benefit you better than secondhand opinions on das webs.

Hows about learning stuff from other people that do things outside your preferred sphere of influence...

Part of you problem is the whole being stuck in the '80s thing. Hey if it were up to me I'd be stuck in the early '90s or late '60s forever. But that's not how things work.

Grow.

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

Bieling is spot on! A little compromise and you'd probably find a band more easily. Plus, you might learn you like playing different genres of music as well. I used to be mostly a stone cold rockabilly kinda player, stuck in the 50's and 60's, but then I got with my current band. Now I'm playing a V with EMG's and loving the shit out of it! The best part, they let me throw down some of my rockabilly licks when I feel the need. You might find a group like that too, you know?

The best part though... then you're a rock and roll, kick ass guitar player on a stage, so the chicks thing won't be a problem anymore either.

Jobs come and go, man, there's no such thing as corporate loyalty anymore. Just get another job and milk that check until they shitcan you. Rinse, repeat.

I wholeheartedly support you buying a Vox and a Tubescreamer though, that's power. **** all that rack shit.

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

Find other ways for your creative outlet. Does it have to be 80's thing? Maybe for experience, get in a band that plays something else. It doesn't have to be forever. Maybe you'll learn something new, or more about yourself.
If it's gotta be the 80's thing, go to where it's at where there are others want the same as you want. If you have a vision, then find a way to get there.
And depression is a bitch, I mean real depression.

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

Hello carnada and everyone esle,

there are some famous online sites like "CDBaby" where you can promote your music.

It doesn't mean, my friend, that if you don't find a band to promote your musical ideals or a girl to "plug in your guitar" you willl have to go through heavy depression and stuff like this.

You can create your music, create a "MySpace" profile, go to "CDBaby" upload it, then with a link from "MySpace" they can go and buy it.

So you can have some money/revenues (correct word?) from there and you can enjoy what you are doing.

Internet is a great tool, an evil one some might say, but stills a great tool. You can use it to post an advert like "these are my interests in music... who wants?" - and who knows? Maybe you will find a band.

Remember always my words...:

What you experience is not depression. Out from music only creativity and happiness comes not sadness and depression.

Find the balance in these, dont let it take you down. There are ways but we must search them 'cause with the first look we can't see them even if they are in front of us - if you know what I mean.

I have suffered from depression but I found solution from music even if it came (I used to believe that) from music but it wasn't.

There are many ways just don't let your bad thoughts lead your way.
'Cause as I said, what you suffer is not depression. It is called pessimism.
Trust me I know the feeling...

Have a nice day.

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

Everybody goes through depression. Allow yourself to feel like crap, but don't let it take over you. Find something positive to put your energies into. Maybe that means trying to find some guys to play with...maybe something completely unrelated to music. Just try to find something positive.

And don't sell your gear now. Your mind isn't 100% rational when you are in a depression. You will regret later something you sell now for sure.

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

rock n roll is rock n roll man... get rid of the big rig, all the midi effects and shit, that's all overkill.

since you don't have transportation, a rack unit and cab is uneconomical. pick up a small marshall combo, like a DSL 401 or something.
then go find a band that plays good rock n roll!

there's more to rock then maiden!

HAng in there man! We all go through that!
A few times I thought about quitting everthing. Then for several months I was really depressed, I took some days off work and everything. I then realized it was because I wasn't doing what I loved. Its just a phase man, no worries

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

Start a cover band bro. Variety band. It will help u get situated with money, you will grow musically, meet people that you might want to start an original band, you will meet girls too hehe. When I was playing covers fulltime I was literally doing at least 4 gigs a week and sometimes even every single day. I was about your age making up to a grand a week. Unfortunatley I was picking up tabs at IHOP every nite and not using my cash wisely. Use ur talents bro.

Some great advice here mate.
I'm with the others on the covers band thing.
You'll meet chicks, diversify your playing, make more contacts to pursue your style of music, make cash, and have a blast!!
You may even get your member fondled!!

Re: Depression is hitting me hardcore...

This is my problem though, if I get a rehearsal space I wouldnt have money to pay for it. I wouldnt even have transportation to bring all the gear there, and I dont want to sell my gear because it took me like a year to get it all complete and find all the parts for it. And if I were to leave all my stuff in a basement at a bassistīs house I wouldnt trust him because I would not know him for long enough. I am not even sure if I want to follow a music career because all my teachers are musical geniouses and they have Masters in classical guitar from like 3 different universities and they still teaching at music stores for 20 bucks half an hour and then the music store keeps most of it. And they live with roomates tyll the age of 40. So I dont know man, then im gonna be all depressed after seeing my friends getting married, buying houses, having kids, nice cars, while im just single in a room with 2 guitars and an amp.

Hold your head up man. You may want to step out of your usual comfort zone and play with a band that's not just about the 80s stuff. I'd get a combo if I were You with a couple pedals and find a rock band. I've never had more fun playing than simple 4 chord rock and roll

Sounds like you have some soul searching to do. Its not the end of the world though man. Sooner or later every youngster hits that y and has to decide if they want to go the traditional route, college, job ect or do the unconventional, musician. Somtimes you can do both. You need quick coin so a job might do u good, while ur figuring everything else out.
