Gear you most regret buying/not buying
I thought it would be fun to discuss the gear that you have bought that you wish you had not and the gear you had not bought that you wish you did.
For me, it would have to be pedals. On two occassions, I came across fantastic deals that I turned away and am now regretting. The first deal was a Roger Meyer Octavia and Hendrix Fuzz Face that screamed tone, yet I passed them over. The seller wanted some outrageously low price, I think $150 for both, but it was too much of a hassle. That one isn't as bad as the second. I found an estate sale that had a ton of gear, a few old strats, but what caught my attention was the Electro Harmonix lot they had. If I remember correctly, it was a micro synthesizer, a pog, and maybe a q tron, I'm not sure. Also the guy had 2 or 3 Boss pedals and a power supply. Prices on that weren't bad but again I skipped it. That one still haunts me. ![]() Other than that, I once almost bought a beat up ESP KH for a few bucks, but the seller, off of Craigslist, was really creepy on the phone. He wouldn't stop telling me his musical legacy and all this fantasticism about having a speaker fall on him. The only reason I regret that one sometimes is for the SD Invaders that were in that thing. i'll try and think of more, I'm sure there are plenty.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Err, basically any "upgrades" I've bought. I bought a JCM 800 combo, forgot to thoroughly test it. The reverb tank is busted so I can't play with it, and I'm going to have to sell it for 50% of the price I had intended due to repair costs or whatever. I also bought a new main guitar, a Jackson RR3. I regret it MOSTLY because it's hard to transport, re-tuning it is a pain, and the weight is so misplaced, it's not even comfortable playing it. It sounds awesome but it was just a wrong buy. Not to mention it easily get dings, and few people seem to want it, so it's hard to sell for a good price. I also bought sort of a "practise" guitar because I needed SOMETHING to practise with and a guitar that was easily tuned and retuned. But I realized the colors were awful, and that I had paid too much for it (bought it second-hand) and the pick-ups are faulty to some level (they're not as loud as my Les Paul Special-II) and their sustain is pretty poor in comparison.
So all these stuff I bought, 2 out of 3 items being bought second-hand, I can sell them for no more than 3/4 of the price I bought them. That's almost 500 USD for me. And no, I don't use any of this stuff anymore. I'm selling the JCM 800 this weekend but I doubt anyone's gonna buy the guitars off of me any time soon. Feels really shitty. What I do regret is not having saved a little more and bought a JCM 800 head or something. I saw a couple of them out there for a great price. Or I should've just traded the JCM 800 for a JCM 900 head right away before there were any obvious problems with it (now 2 months later I have to sell it for much less to that very same guy).

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
haha, Metallon, that reminds me of the JS30RR that I had for a short while. That's been my least favorite guitar that I've ever owned. The neck was about twice as heavy as the body so it would always tilt downwards; darn near impossible to play standing up, forget sitting down!

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Saw an awesome LP goldtop in a pawn shop window one night in Nashville, TN going to a concert...was around 1989. Had a price tag on it for $450. I thought to myself that it was a steal. I've regretted now buying that guitar ever since.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Regret selling my Strat Plus and Carlsbro 50.
Used to have 3 Fender amps. Hot Rod Deville 2x12 , Deluxe 1x12 and Custom Vibrolux Reissue. Should've kept the Vibrolux. 2x10 30 watts. Gorgeous for blues. Spent too much on non Marshall amps. A regret. Oh well...........

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
My 80's Mesa Boogie MKIII Simul Class combo with bubinga cabinet and EV12 Black Shadow. All hand wired. I've had MK III's since and none have come even close. When I ordered it, it took months to get and when I did receive it I sold my 87 Silver Jubilee half stack which I also bought new back then which goes to show I went from dumb to dumb again and then stupid when I sold the MK III to finance the all rack Boogie stereo and pre amp setup, which worked great but really I should have just kept the MKIII and not eaten or dated for awhile!
SO THOSE 2 amps gone. Then I had THE best guitar I have ever owned a Custom 24 PRS with the honduran mohogany and the brazilian rosewood fretboard and the really cool bird inlays in whale blue. I know they still make them (mine was whale blue) but I've bought a few since and none sound like it did either.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
For some reason well I know the reason actually, I wanted more gain and balls and the Boogie had it.
Yep a real bummer, but oh well I'll have to live with the measly gear I do have!

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
I pretty much have liked all the gear I have had and have...
I guess the only things I have ever bought that i didn't like were a pack of "Fender" strings and a gimmick pick called the "Stylus Pick"...had a really wierd tip to it that would supposedly force you to pick in a more consistant and accurate style.... Anyone remember those???LOL!!

Yeah Steelhorse...I'd love to have some of your "measly gear"
I know the feeling though. I'd love to have my 1987 Jubilee 2x12 that my ex sold while I was at work that day. Bought it new and for some reason the tone was incredible. Man I'd love to have that amp back.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
I bought a damn line6 spider3 30 watt. It was horrible I even went for help to get it set right cause it played my Alexi 600 perfectly but the washburn sounded horrible. Noone helped me and everyone on the Line6 forums blew me off. Bought the MG250DFX and plugged my washburn in it OMG!!! It sounded so wonderful. Well worth it. Will never buy line6 again and would advise people to do the same unless they want a hassle.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Theres a lot of gear I regret selling only one I regret not buying. In 89'or 90' a guy I knew was selling his JCM800 head for $400. My mom was going to lend me the money but I didn't want to have all my money go to paying her back that summer (I was 15) so I passed. It turns out he wasn't selling the head for $400 He was selling the head and cab for $400!!
![]() A friend of mine bought it and still has it today! Everytime I go over his house I look at that amp and "sigh"!! ![]()

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
in 1991 I had the chance to buy a second hand dinky di Gibson SG for $500 AUD, even had the money on me at the time. I still to this day have no idea what I ended up spending that money on. I started playing guitar the following year though. I wish I have bought it now. As for selling, I wish I still had my Fernandes Strat, that was a bloody nice guitar. I also regret not buying good gear to start with. I spent way too much money on lots of cheap guitars instead of spending a lot of money on 1 or 2 really good guitars.
I now have the really good gear but it has come over a long time. |

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
i bought one of the new Sound City combos, 40w valve jobby. Sounded pretty great (although the distortion channel was disgusting) but it's broken consistently since, even after being repaired by the company and then replaced.
currently in the process of fighting for my money back for it. i've also got a morley bad horsie wah, which just doesnt suit my style at all anymore, should have just gone crybaby. the best buys ive made were the '79 pickups that now sit in my custom player strat, and the 1979 jmp mkII master volume combo. its nice to finally have some pro gear that i can rely on! like everyone says on here, i should have known better than to think anything can do the job better than a marshall. great value too, £460 for the marshall compared to £400 on the sound city. pure madness. |

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
regret buying:
MARSHALL AVT100 - I was out of town and needed a backup amp. Thought I could spend a little more and get something I could use as a primary also. NOT! BOSS ME-20 - just couldn't get decent sounds out of it. LINE6 Spider III 75 watt - wanted to try a modelling amp.. oh well... back to the marshall :-) regret not buying: a 1970-something strat that my friend had at his house. It played like butter. I guess it was always there to use so I didn't need to buy it. Until he sold it to some chick that liked him b/c he needed the cash. She didn't even know how to play... blah... regrets selling: 1987(?) 2203 - don't want to talk about it... ok, well, went on tour with me overseas (from the US). Was even shipped back with no protection packaging (the shippers totally screwed me) and it NEVER failed me once! Why did I sell it? I really don't know...I miss her

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Through the years I have had alot of nice guitars. I bought most of them for a song and sold them usually doubling my money, or thinking that it was a waste having so many guitars lying around not being played...thinking they would never bring more than what I was going to sell them for at the time, somebody making me an offer I couldn't turn down.... etc.
Whatever the reason, I regret selling 99.9 percent of them. The deals that I saw I usually bought unless I was broke or soembody beat me to it. Today I still have a decent collection of guitars but most of the vintage ones are gone. I think any USA re-issue Gibson, Fender etc is going to appreciate in price but not the way say a 58 or 59 L.P. Standard has. The prices have dropped a bit, but if a vintage axe is going for say 350,000.00 and you can pick up a exact replica for say 3500.00-6000.00 I say your getting a deal! JUMP ON IT!

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
I somewhat regret buying my LP standard as I have had problems with it and I think I could have gotten a better guitar for the money. Plus I love Les Pauls but epi just does not cut it, and lets face it being an 80's guy a Les Paul just is not my kind of guitar I am wanting right now, and after I bought it I was mad for a while that I did not get the MIM strat instead...
I have no regrets at all on my JCM 800 2204 and my 1960 cab with the TS9 tubescreamer. Sound is incredible and I could not ask for more in an amp (except maybe an fx loop). I love my JCM 800 and would not trade it for any other amp in the world right now.

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
I become nauseated every time I think of the 68 Fender Twin I threw in the dumpster when I was 18 because it was busted and cost too much to fix.. or the 74 Les Paul Standard I sold when I was about 21 for about $300 for a night out in the dope house... OR the early 70's SG, you know the white one with 3 pickups that I just can't remember where the fuck I misplaced it AFTER I quit drinking..... I stay up late nights scanning craigslist and EBay looking for those items just to punish myself on a daily basis.
I deserve a slow painful death....

Re: Gear you most regret buying/not buying
Played a fender twin for years never got the sound I was looking for. I walked into a music store in 1999 and the owner was selling his personal JCM 800 model 2204 50 watt plus 4X12 marshall. I asked how much he said $750.00, I had $ 500.00 in my pocket so he took it. Best day of my life, I didn't even play in the store (never even played through a half stack before). I got home plugged the half stack in cranked it up. It was like I was a born again guitar player, the sound went through me like nothing before. Been playing that amp ever since.
