Oh yes, I know the story of how the stack evolved out of the 8x12 monster that the roadies had a problem with. But if you look at the way 4x12s were marketed
since then, the slanted ones were very often sold in a half stack rig.
Most of the ones I've seen personally (gigs, concerts, studios) were slants in a half stack, and two straights in a full stack. Thats not to say you cant use either, or.
