The RP500 and RP1000 are similar but not the same. Also, a lot depends on how you want to use it. With the RP1000 I can use other pedals and bring them in or out of the chain. You can also put them before or after the on-board effects. You can use the effects only like a regular pedal board or, with the amp loop, take your amp's pre out and use the modeling to change the tone of the amp (and either use speaker emulations or not).

All are a little different and do certain things that may or may not be useful, depending on what you want out of it.
