Re: WTB: Marshall JMP-1 Preamp
I used a JMP-1 for years, still have it. The true power and flexibility of it is unleashed when you pair it with a MIDI controlled effect unit. Since the JMP-1 has no effects built in, you're probably gonna want reverb, delay, chorus, etc. Most rack effect processors have a MIDI pedalboard that's used to change patches, and a MIDI "out" that is used to send the same patch changes to the JMP-1, so both units switch together. This way, rather than having only 4 "sounds", you can have up to 100, and each sound can be a unique combination of preamp sounds and effects, with different settings. I prefer this arrangement to using a 4 channel footswitch with separate effect pedals for the following reasons:
-less cables.
-neater, and easier to setup
-no batteries or power supplies
-practically infinite number of different patch combinations, each can have unique settings.
-some processors have a built in tuner
-you could have a set of patches for each song, if different combinations of effect settings are required.
Don't be afraid of MIDI. Yes, it can get extremely complicated if you want to get into sequencing, and MIDI drums and other instruments, but using MIDI to switch patches is simple, and requires little to no knowledge. When you step on a button on the pedalboard, (let's say for your clean sound), a command is sent over the MIDI cable to the effect unit to switch to that particular patch. A cable is connected from the MIDI "out" or "thru" of the effect unit, to the MIDI "in" of the JMP-1. The same command is received by the JMP-1, so it also switches to the same patch number. Since both units switch to the same patch, you can control both units from the same pedalboard. This is the beauty, and simplicity of MIDI.
