Not sure whether it's normal or not, but my DSL 50 does that too. But I figure it's not that big of a deal, since you can't switch from clean to crunch via a footswitch anyway, so you probably won't be trying to do that in a live situation, where the difference in volume would really stick out.

I like to keep my DSL on the Crunch channel, and use a volume pedal (or the volume knob on the guitar) to get clean tones. I don't use the red channel that much - the Crunch channel has all the gain I need and sounds fuller and fatter than the red channel.
