You are correct, you are paying a premium for the "AA" top on the current Standard.
As I pointed out that the first three years of the Classic were of Custom Shop quality, they waned off each year after that and became a "budget" Les Paul by Y2K. Still very good guitars if you can get passed the green inlays!
