Thanks for your quick reply. Will do exactly what you said and replace all three preamp tubes this week and check over the whole amp for dirt/dust and dry solder joins. From my knowledge of valve amps I would say both transformers are okay judging from the results of my basic tests, i.e. check for short circuits and heating up from prolonged high-level testing.
