I haven't tried one but have had other players I've talked to give it high marks for a boost. I've still got it on my list...
Well I've been playing with the Danelectro CTO-1 for awhile now and I have to say for any price it is a good solid pedal. For $40 its a steal! Its called the Transparent Overdrive and it pretty much is just that. It Will hold its own against spendier pedals.
I paired it up with the Marshall on the red channel either lead voices and it adds body and brings out more harmonics with nice controllable feed back. It tightens gain up a bit but doesn't render it sterile like some pedals will do. So it adds more punch overall without hurting the Marshall's character. Overtones galore and controllable too.
Works as just a clean boost as well. To me it doesn't sterilize the clean channel either. It isn't a high gain pedal but it isn't meant to be. It takes what your amps given and with slight adjustments to the pedal adds punch with clarity. Overtones bloom into nice harmonics when fingering chords or soloing.
It seems to fit the Night Train very well. That amp is finicky with all my other pedals. It didn't jive with the saturation or coloring with them.
Originally I bought the CTO-1 for the Marshall but it has been in front of the NT most of the time. Again here it adds punch with clarity. Gives the overdrive settings on the amp some nice bite. Clears up the thick voicing on the NT and it just sounds better for a raunchier, punchier, and more biting tone. Cleans up naturally with guitar volume.
True bypass with no pop when turning on and off. No midhump to its character. Very nice overdrive pedal at a steal of a price for what you get.
Its replaced my beloved Bad Monkey for all duties. Maybe a couple of the others too but don't tell them...
